After various virus attacks that may or may not be legitimate as false positives is a reality for all of us that our computers are an important part of our lives and for some of us our livelihood.

I am looking to jump ship to Apple. I know nothing of the platform the OS and its abilities. I only know what YouTube is willing to publish and that is not much when it comes to real functionality for someone like myself that is a total and complete noob with Apple.

I know there is an apple tax but I don't know if it is once-off or monthly.

Tools I work with:
Android Studio,
Unreal 5
Unity
blender
Visual studio.

These tools are connected to my primary income as I do projects for private clients. Can I work with all of these pieces of software on a Mac?

Edit. [insert wall of text here:]

I see I am being accused of a lot of things. So I added the following:

Despite the many allegations I do not download or use pirated software. You can't build a business on it nor is it reliable or stable. But I see this goes into the echo chamber as fact sadly. I cannot change your mind on this because people here love drama and make unfounded accusations all the time.

I use legitimate streaming services that I pay for. I use legitimate software that I paid for. I earn good money with the things I do that are not coding-related. I don't know what else to say. I really don't.

The truth is sometimes something sneaks in. It can be from a friend or a family member and even if I scan the thumb drive it is not 100% safe. There can be a virus on it that the antivirus does not know about yet. As good as they are they are not perfect. Just please keep this in mind moving forward.

As for the accusation of procrastination. I am reliable only on myself. I cannot afford to procrastinate and work 20 hours a day easily every day. This includes my actual income as I have a fair amount of equipment that I generate income with. I still have to create the products and deliver them. I only work locally because the products are fragile and cannot be shipped. Thanks to my technical know-how, few can compete. But as stuff gets cheaper and easier to use it is important to diversify my skills so that I can continue to live.

I am not asking for the sun and the moon. All I wanted to know was what the apple tax is. So that I can make a sound decision. Now many of you said "Never ask for advice on a Forum" Yet even Reddit in its current sad state does have many good people that try to answer honestly and provide as much detail as possible. The problem is South Africa has many factors many Reddit users can't account for. Simply put they don't live here. We do, so we can be cool about it and help each other out or this continues and the value of the forum
diminishes alongside the quality of the members it attracts.

It will work but you may find your mileage would vary with some of these..

Unreal 5 November 22 release added support for M1/M2 macs, so there are bound to be a bug or two cropping up or some oddity of some kind..

The post above brings up an important point of looking to see if these packages run natively on Apple silicon.

Another option that may meet your requirements is Linux. The packages that you listed are also available for this OS, with the exception being Visual Studio Code being available rather than Visual Studio 2022 (in case that is a problem). The advantage of this approach would be that you could trial the setup in a VM for free before committing.

Just be aware that you'd really want to be on a M1/M2 Mac for best bang for your bucks, which means ARM as opposed to X86.

This is mostly not an issue, and is now pretty well supported by all major software vendors but you should check to be sure.

I'm not 100% sure about all the other software in your stack but I can give you advice around the general Visual Studio environment - a lot depends on how legacy you need to be - e.g. if you still need to maintain a lot of older .NET framework based projects you will need to pay an annual sub for Parallels and run in an emulated Windows 11 environment which actually works very well apart from a few gotchas that are slowly being addressed (e.g. any projects that need the old TFS don't work on ARM in VS2022. Also, installing a local MS SQL Server is a challenge). However, if all your VS work is in .NET Standard or Core then you can work exclusively on the Mac with the Mac version of Visual Studio.

There is an element of tin foil hat syndrome in there, in my opinion..
I am beginning to wonder that myself. I took my laptop and updated it with a few free antivirus software. I am currently scanning my thumb drives, backups and even the router. It might be that I am getting it because one of my backups is infected. Since most of it is Rom base it will take a day or so.

But you are 100% correct I never had a virus problem till recently.

No, it is factual McAfee found something. No tinfoil hat. It was in Firefox. Firefox is mostly just for emails I keep it separate from my Brave browser.

I might just use brave from now on I am thinking to dump Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

Really dont get how people get infected so much. Been using the default windows AV for 6+ years and I go to all sorts of sites, for "free" stuff too, multiple mail accounts and have yet to get a single infection on windows.

.. if it looks dodge, dont click/install it :D

I echo this.

I would rather get proper PAID for virus protection and PAID for software.

Dont pirate stuff than move to mac and everything will cost you more anyway...

I have likely had one true infection that was over 10 years ago and my own doing...

I am a new developer and Visual Studio can be replaced if need be. I really only use it because my instructors use it. I am looking to maybe get a Mac mini M2. Obviously, entry-level ones as they are expensive.

It is honestly new to me as well. As I said it might be one of my old backups.

Same. Windows built in AV with Malwarebytes running in the background with the occasional full scan with Malwarebytes. For any file I'm really uncertain of I just chuck in Sandboxie and exectute. It's sort of hard to understand how people still get viruses in 2023 unless they're downloading cracks etc. from regular http sites.

I do not pirate, all my software is legitimate. This includes my music creation software which costs over R11k. My Graphic software was over R6.7k. It is actually why I am finding it hard to jump to Linux as Corel Draw is not supported. Also, I use it for my GUI designs it does a really nice job. I know of gimp and I know there is free software available but they lack functionality. That said the music creation software is a pain as my hearing is essentially lost. That said I had a small operation done beginning of this year to drain the fluid and it is doing a lot for me.

I am very happy to report that my one ear is almost normal. Still hoping for the other ear to return to normal. Sorry topic but it is important I thought.

Then how on earth are you getting viruses... stop plugging in flash sticks found in the parking lot >_<
