Looking to jump platform.

Anyway. Back on topic before 10:10 shows intrest in more old outdated and incompatible tech.

@10:10
I’d like to see some of the stuff you do in ue and unity. I fiddle with the vrc sdk a lot but have my roots in ue stuff simply for the performance. Followed that horror youtube tutorial twice and built the health and battery system in both blueprint and c++. I wanted a horror game in a night forest with a flashlight where it’s hard to distinguish between a monster and a bunch of branches. But gave up on that idea for some reason.

:D Pen testing be like

High Ron Swanson long time no see.

Only reader but dvd writer. It’s old as hell though. Don’t be intrigued.
Old stuff has value in my book. I buy up and repair old hardware where I can. I have old laptops doing everything from driving my old hardware to running VMs to being a Minecraft server. The list goes on.

I’m mostly saying don’t be intrigued for everyday use considering your approach to drivers, printers, scanners and such like.

See once a disk burned in a virus-free environment and locked. It is 100% virus free and can work potentially for 10+ years.

Secondly, if I need to clean an SSD or HDD and you do it with a thumb drive chances are the virus can copy to it. It is just a fact. Thirdly if the disk is encrypted upon creation and stored properly how can any hacker in the known world get to it? Plant a Virus on it and or potentially destroy it.

See people forget that data centres still have employees and those employees can still get angry, can be bribed and or even get closed down over other things like war, bankruptcy and the list goes on. Cloud is not perfect. It never was. You don't even know the age or type of drive they use. There are a million things that can go wrong. Then there is the question of a stable connection in South Africa in 2023 where we had the most load shedding in our recent history.

What is so bad to store stuff on disk? Any hard drive thumb drive can fail and can be infected if the pc is not clean. I had 1 disk in all my adult life that had a virus on it. that is 1 out of 135 disks. I do keep external drives with the same data on them. because multiple backups are a thing. I had many hard drives fail on me. So I don't see them as reliable.

So I don't get it. What is the problem with keeping ROM backup?

Legally purchased software you own can be obtained via the suppliers sites without any issue. Unless you’re going eol legacy which from your description doesn’t sound like it.

Unity, UE, Ableton Live, etc... all these are in perfect condition on the developers outlets. Backing up data on the other hand only evolved to cloud storage but if you can’t afford the monthly plan for 1 or more TB of backup how do you fit that on DVD’s?

I hate to say this in a negative way but you need to really get with the times.

The worst, and I mean the absolute worst I had in recent years was getting a specific d-link network driver and that took me 15 minutes to navigate their shyte site.

So what exactly are you backing up? Saving on disc? Hell tell me it’s music or movies I don’t care but a quick scan will kill those old f-ers. Modern viruses injects itself to pass UAC first which is normally related to doing some kind of a setup or something. You stated software on a disc, what software?

I will consent that hard drives are no way to store valuable information. They fail, people drop them, things get out on top of them, general wear and tear.

That being said, i have some DVDs we made many many years ago with epic holiday memories. They are not working at all, for no apparent reason.

Your obsession with viruses do seem a bit excessive though. For the most part, people get viruses from dodgy downloads. Other times is just "harmless" malware that pushes ads, etc. False positives are also common. Browser add-ons, games, etc, that installs some unwanted application because you didn't untick some box hidden somewhere, etc.

Ok, noted, thanks.

From there, the paranoia about viruses?
I lost 4 months' worth of work yes. See a problem with not having a read-only backup is, if the computer is infected the backup gets infected. Now in my defence at the time windows, antivirus did not pick it up. By the time I detected it, it got into my externals and thumb drives and about 12% was corrupted. So I grabbed a Windows 7 installation disk and formatted the hard drives using the partitioning tool. It is the only way to completely wipe a drive safely. It was a bad day but Damage was done.

So I run scans every day before I start my day. Takes about 15min for Windows antivirus 15min for McAfee and and little over 20min for Windows malware tool. I normally go for a run while the scans are busy.

Proper storage is very important for DVDs Also how you write them is important.

I found the following to work.

1> Don't overburn your DVD.
2> Do a data integrity check Nero has this function built in.
3> Use separate DVD writers. Meaning you create a backup with 1 then a second disk on a different burner to make a second backup. Disks are cheap and storing them is not that hard.

4> I used 7zip for the longest time now to encrypt my data before burning.
4.1 > Set compression level to 0 - Store
4.2 > Split Volumes. bytes: 4092M - FAT
4.3 > Encryption "Put in your password" and set the Encryption method to AES-256.

Now I cannot vouch if this will work for you. Remember DVD RW your disk quality and writing speed can allow the disk to be faulty. Never write at full speed.

Now I do this on my external drives as well. So if it gets stolen the data on it is useless for someone else. It is just good practice.

A good password obviously goes a long way here as well.

It's bitrot I tell you, coupled with the inherent 2ROT13 encryption algorythm used when you burn disks.
DVD rot is a reality. To combat this I rewrite all my disks 3 years apart from each other. In large total, I only have 135 Disks. If you keep the important stuff It is normally not big. Also yes if my cap is not cooked for the month I tend to push my backups to the cloud as well. Just so happens I didn't push my safe files as they were too big and my data cap couldn't handle it.

Back to the topic. Why do I want to jump ship to Apple?

Low power consumption, essentially I never heard of an Apple OS virus. It is fast for its size and a 1000 Watt power station will drive it for days.
The desktop computer consumes a lot of power, windows viruses are common. Upgrading it is expensive GPU R13K on its own. 1000Watt power station will drive it for only a couple of hours.

Sadly and this is true, Nvidia made the Mac mini M2 cheap. It only cost R13.7k and it is a complete computer. For the same money you can buy a power house of a GPU but you need to upgrade your PSU to 1000Watts eliminating the use of a portable power station.

I am sorry to say this but Apple is cheap.

No, it isn't, at least not on the factors you're basing this "cheap" on.

This is what I want to know, please tell me why you think it is more expensive? It is kind of the point of all this.

Just want to add to this IF I buy one I will take an extended warranty on it. I think it is called Apple Care+ that gives you 3 years for R1820.30 or so I am told.
