I have a potential disaster - I'm out on a game farm in the karoo, and I can't seem to find my car key (hyundai i10). I'm waiting for reception to open in the hopes tht someone found it and handed it in, but in case not... What are my options? The only thing I can think of is get dad to drive the 5 hours here with my spare key, biut for obvious reasons I don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

You can't even hotwire it, though, can you? Because it needs the transponder to disable the immobilizer :(

Help!

CathJ, all I can say is, that for me to get a new key for my Renault Clio, it's like R1182.

That's the key, cut the blade, program the key to the immob (not even the alarm!) :(

As a matter of fact, here is a "quote" from Renault;

Good Day

The key will cost R600ex vat
The blade R130ex vat
Re-coding- R260ex vat
The blade will need to be cut and the key to be programmed to the vehicle

Total R1128.60

We have 1 in stock so if you are able to eft say R600.00 a copy of-

• Copy of License document
• Copy of ID
• Proof of payment

This is just for my car, not sure about yours.
If you don't have immob or alarm, a place like Manvics or Hyundai should be able to do it.

I don't even care about the cost right now - I'm about 60km from the nearest paved road out in the karoo, and no locksmith or hyundai person is going to be willing to come out here to help! I guess the only option, If reception doesn't have it, is to call my dad :(

The immobilizer on the Hyundai cars is a strong selling point. Car cannot start without transponder.

To get a new key cut they either need your old key, or they need to replace your lock. Cutting a new key from an existing one also requires them to reprogramme all the existing keys at the same time (we discovered this with the Atos). But its not as expensive as other cars thank goodness.

Where in the Karoo are you for FYI?

What about Hyundai's Roadside Assistance? 0861 111 256 I am sure that they have some key replacement assistance?

My Fiat cost me close to R2000.
@OP, sorry to hear, sounds like it's gonna be a costly affair, but you'll get through.

I'm so relieved - I found it! A mouse - or something - was in my room last night, and it stole two of my chocolates, ripped open my packet of niknaks (leaving a trail across the floor), and also tried to take my car key! Luckily it was too big for it to drag away entirely, but it did manage to hide it behind a plant pot where I eventually found it.

Thanks all for the advice :)

Cool, glad you found it.

What we do when we go on holiday is take the spare key with us but we always leave it in another bag after we once locked both keys in the car :)

I've got a plastic key that I take with my around my neck on a lanyard when I go out of town on my own. When it's a family trip out of town the missus takes a spare key in her bag.

I never knew about plastic keys till the other day when my friend showed me that his spare key was actually a plastic one. Got me thinking of having a key cut for this purpose.

No, no alcohol involved :) Although I admit I wouldn't believe it If someone told me that story :)

Taking the spare key with me is an excellent idea - I'll remember that for my next trip!
