A date has been set for the new long awaited Lotus hypercar./

Lotus Type 130 electric hypercar will be unveiled on 16 July

Lotus' landmark flagship and first all-new model since 2008 will be shown in London ahead of sales beginning soon after

Lotus has revealed a date for the unveiling of its groundbreaking all-new electric hypercar - the Type 130.

The most ambitious car in the firm's history will be shown at "an exclusive event" in Central London on 16 July, barely a few months after Autocar first revealed the project.

Lotus has also confirmed for the first time exactly how many examples will be produced. 130 are planned to be made available to own, up from previous estimates after "several hundred potential owners came forward to express their interest in the new car". It will be built in Norfolk alongside the rest of the maker's range.

The Type 130 will be Lotus’s first all-new production car since 2008. Lotus also claims it will be the first fully electric hypercar built and to go on sale from a British manufacturer. A preview image has been released showing a side profile of the new car, and Autocar was recently given an exclusive walk-around of a full-size clay model at the firm's Hethel base.

The name is a reference to a number of innovative models that have appeared throughout the Norfolk brand’s 71-year history, beginning with the Type 14 Elite in 1957 – claimed to be the world’s first composite monocoque production car. The most recent, the Type 111 (the world’s first aluminium and bonded extrusion construction road car) became the Elise.

Pronounced "eh-vi-ya", the name means 'the living one', or 'first in existence'.

Lotus EV Hypercar Called Evija

Lotus has chosen the Goodwood Festival of Speed to reveal the name of its new all-electric hypercar and is calling on fans to visit its stand for an exclusive glimpse.

The very first British EV hypercar is due to enter production in 2020 and will officially be called Evija.

Pronounced ‘ev-eye-a’ it means ‘the first in existence’ or ‘the living one’. It is highly appropriate; Lotus has an unquestionable reputation for its pioneering approach in both automotive and motorsport. The Evija continues that story of innovation.

What Language Is The Lotus Evija From?

Lotus has officially confirmed its all-electric “hypercar,” of which 130 examples will be built, will be dubbed the Lotus Evija. Evija... Evija.... it glistens on the tongue. But what does it mean?

“Evija,” according to the press release issued by Lotus, “means ‘the first in existence’ or ‘the living one’.” It’s being called the “first in existence,” the company goes on, not because it is the first car ever built (there are a few earlier contenders for the title), but because “it’s the first hypercar from Lotus, our first electric offering and is the first new model under the stewardship of Geely.”

And yet, Lotus promises that it’ll be a “true Lotus,” presumably lightweight, with mind-bending handling, and a faint whiff of glue and cramped spaces.

All that being said, I’m having the darndest time what language Lotus is speaking. Not the language of the release itself, that’s in what ever the hell the British call “English.” The name of the car, rather.

Evija.

While it may mean “the first in existence” or “the living one” in some language, I have no idea what language Lotus may be referring to. Google Translate’s best guess is Latvian, but it doesn’t seem to know why “Evija” is Latvian, since it seems to just mean “Evija” in English:

Lotus Evija

At first known only by its Lotus Type number - Type 130 - the car has been christened the Lotus Evija (pronounced 'E-vi-ya'). As a name it is derived from variations of Eve, and means 'the first in existence' or 'the living one'. It is highly appropriate; Lotus has an unquestionable reputation for its pioneering approach in both automotive and motorsport.

As the first all-electric British hypercar, the Lotus Evija continues that story of innovation. It also signals the start of an exciting new chapter for Lotus under the stewardship of Geely, the fastest growing automotive group in the world.

Lotus Cars CEO Phil Popham said: "Evija is the perfect name for our new car because it is the first all-new car to come from Lotus as part of the wider Geely family. With Geely's support we are set to create an incredible range of new cars which are true to the Lotus name and DNA."

Advanced pure EV powertrain means record-breaking power

With target figures of 2,000 PS of power and 1,700 Nm of torque, the Lotus Evija is the world's most powerful production road car. Key to that exceptional power output is the 2,000 kW lithium-ion battery, supplied with its management system by Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) as part of a joint venture with Lotus to collaborate on advanced propulsion technologies. WAE won a 2018 Queen's Award for Enterprise for translating its EV expertise from the race track to road-going vehicles.

Lotus reveals 1973bhp Evija as world's most powerful production car

New limited-run hypercar to offer Bugatti Chiron and Pininfarina Battista-beating performance in luxurious package

Lotus has revealed the Evija, the all-electric hypercar it claims will be “the most powerful production car in the world”. An output of 1973bhp is promised when it hits roads next year, which is more than the upcoming 1888bhp Pininfarina Battista and Rimac C_Two, and the 1479bhp internally combusted Bugatti Chiron currently in production.

No more than 130 of the two-seat hypercars will be built, each priced at £2.04 million. “Target specifications” include four-wheel drive, 1254lb ft and torque vectoring, giving it a 0-62mph time of less than three seconds, a 0-186mph time of less than nine seconds and a top speed of 200mph-plus. A production slot can be reserved with a refundable £250,000 deposit.

The Evija, apparently pronounced ‘E-vi-ya’, will be Lotus’s first new-model launch under Geely ownership, and is the maker’s first all-new model for more than a decade. It will be made at the company’s traditional home in Hethel, Norfolk, and will act “as a ‘halo’ for the rest of the Lotus range” both now and for “new Lotus performance cars to come”.

The car pictured here in a studio is for show, but Lotus’s design director, Russell Carr, told Autocar that “this is how it’ll be on the road. This is very much the production car. All the surfaces are made to production level.”

The Evija, which is codenamed Type 130, is low and broad, at 4.59m long, 2.0m wide and 1.12m high. According to Lotus, it “marks the beginning of a contemporary new Lotus design language”.

Lotus Evija debuts as world’s most potent ‘series’ road car

Lotus has unleashed Britain’s first all-electric hypercar and it’s a mouthful of superlatives.

Not only does it claim to be the world’s most powerful ‘series production’ road car, with a target output of 2000ps, or 1471kW in metric speak, and 1700Nm of twisting force, but it’s also the world’s lightest EV hypercar, with a kerb weight of just 1680kg. This you can attribute to its one-piece carbon fibre monocoque structure.

Lotus is targeting a 0-100km/h time of under three seconds, and a top speed in the region of 320km/h.

While its power source, developed in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering, is very much in tune with the future, its layout and weight distribution salute Lotus sports cars of yore, with a mid-mounted battery pack.

That, incidentally, is said to allow a driving range of up to 400km between charges.

Lotus Evija May Have A Go At The Nürburgring Production Car Record

Last week, Lotus shook the automotive world with their new Evija hypercar. With 1 973 all-electric horsepower (1 471 kW) at the disposal of your right foot, the proposed figures are quite astonishing. It isn’t all show and no go from Lotus either. Not only are they sure that the Evija will be quick, but they are also saying it has a good shot at being a record-breaker.

In a recent interview with Pistonheads, principal platform engineer at Lotus, Louis Kerr, stated that the British hypercar might have an attempt at breaking the production car record at the infamous Nürburgring. The current record is held by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with a time of 6:44.97. While the Volkswagen ID R’s lap time is a bit out of reach, Kerr said they are confident at beating the track-only Nio EP9’s time of 6:45.90. Since the two times are less than a second apart, the production car record should be in reach too.

Lotus reveals new logo as part of brand revamp

British firm unveils bolder version of its long-running roundel logo as it prepares to launch the Evija electric hypercar

Lotus has unveiled a revised version of its roundel logo as it continues its revamp and revival under new ownership.

The Norfolk-based brand was bought by Chinese firm Geely, which also owns Volvo, in 2017. It has since developed the 1973bhp Evija electric hypercar as the flagship for a major line-up revamp, which will also include the brand’s first SUV.

To reflect the changes, Lotus has tweaked the famous roundel that has been used in various forms since Colin Chapman founded the firm in 1948. While maintaining the classic design, the logo has been simplified using just two bold colours – the firm’s classic British Racing Green and yellow – and the straightening of the 'Lotus' wording.
