Agreed again. I don't mind paying if it at least has all the bells and whistles, one expects to pay premium for. But a Tazz works to from point A to B, it's just so much nicer having to drive somewhere and doing so in luxury :o

It depends what you define as luxury. Having a million gadgets that you are not really going to use isn't luxury IMO. Even something like electric windows are pointless as you don't really use them.

Basically, if a car:
is quiet.
has a good ride.
is easy to drive.
has comfortable seats,
has a sound system
has aircon.
has a dimmable rear view mirror.

It has 99.9% of the equipment needed for comfort that most people actually use. Easiest test is to drive a car that has any of these things missing. You don't notice things like park distance sensors when you are sitting in an Nissan 14skedonk.

I have upgraded from a 320i Manual 6 speed sedan to a 2.2d Landrover Auto.

Features are more or less the same, but the quality of the drive in the SUV vs the Sedan is just miles apart. Simple things like the arm rest makes a drive sooooo much more pleasurable. The Seats being higher off the floor makes me feel like I'm a passenger and not a race car driver. Simple things, yet they make a huge difference. Would I have loved it with cloth interior, no cruise control, PDC and electric seats and mirrors. Sure, it's just so much nicer to have it all.

That being said, when I first started driving cars with leather seats years ago, it was a nasty adjustment I hated it. Now I can't see myself driving a car without leather seats. Cloth just looks and feels dirt :o

Same reason people put on those ridiculously large spoilers and fit pretty colourful lights underneath the car making it look like a disco bowl or taxis with the fishing rods and garfield dolls stuck to the exterior. It is just what pleases them - eye of the beer holder and all that.

I have no issue with them doing what they think to be great choices. But they should also not have any issues with me telling them how stupid they are for wasting money on it and decreasing the quality of their ride :p

If a dad picks up his kid from school with a C63, does he also fall into your low IQ bracket? Should he instead get a i10? After all the C63 is a highly modded C class. Would you think differently if SA offered modded 4x4s out the box?

Some enjoy getting stuck in the mud. Some enjoy throwing their bike around a corner. Others play tennis on a weekend. It has nothing to do with IQ. What do you enjoy doing on weekends?

If someone who is doing the "modding" actually knows what they are doing and does the full component analysis to make sure the vehicle is balanced as well as possible, than sure.

I like doing things that are not predicated on investing in a depreciating asset that costs a lot of money to insure and operate.

You haven't quite answered the question. I really would like to know what an intelligent guy like you gets up to on the weekends.

Excluding the normal stuff for weekends that I assume everyone does (DIY, watching movies/TV, playing vidya, going shopping).

I like to experiment with baking/cooking, which is the regular hobby.

More so is astronomy/astrophotography (but that is heavily weather/time/money dependant).

Umm, incorrect on both counts. new cars are new cars, and whether a want or a need, you still need someone to buy it new for you to get a second hand car...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I bought my car cash. And it might actually increase human contact with the opposite sex.... ;)

Whats vidya? So, pretty much rat race kind of things, seeing as your astronomy hobby is money dependant, and you seem to either have a shortage of it or an unwillingness to spend it. No going out there splashing in mud holes and exploring the world kind of stuff...

We have reservations about people dropping perfectly engineered vehicles, to what someone can afford and what he can't all based on assumptions... Play the game not the man :)

Yes I do read all the posts, not just certain ones in random order.

Calling people who do stupid things to their car stupid, is a good conclusion to draw. Trying to attack someone with sensible financial views and logic with silly little retorts like "can't afford" "shortage of money" is silly. I think that's a bit ironic at best. Just trying to save you the embarrassment as I'm of the opinion he's probably way better off than most in this thread. But carry on I guess :o
