Anyone of you ever suffered from this and how did you treat it? For the past year or two, I get this sporadically - every 4 to 6 months.

It is like an inflamation of the lower back and bending is pure agony ! Instead of bending over, I have to lower my legs (this is the healty way of bending, but most of us do not do that anyway). We do not realise how important the back is until it conks in :)

Every time this flares up, I take Cataflam D until the pain and discomfort are gone. But this mean I am now in my 2nd week of not gymming, which I hate.

I also suffer from lower back problems. I ask my doctor for MyPaid Forte, they work the best.

I sleep with a open window and sometimes the wind blows on my back. The next morning I'm in so much pain I cannot get out of bed.

Also try to sleep one night on the hard ground. In the past that worked wonders for me.

I have sporadic back pain as well since my high school days, but have never treated or sought remedy for it.
Just grin and bear in my case.
But it's no fun...

get a good mattress, lift stuff whit your legs not your back, lose some weight/get yourself a 6 pack and look after your back

One thing you should check out blu, especially since you are heading into middle age :D, is Mr and Mrs Kidney. Kidneys sit in the lower back and a pain in the kidneys can bring down a giant any day. Kidney stones are among the most painful curses in the world. Have a urine test or a scan of your kidneys to rule out those kinds of disorders.

If the back pain is simply from muscle problems, an exercise you can try to do is called The Plank. Wiki it. The idea is to to get in a pushup position with your forearms on the ground, upper arms pointing up and keeping your back straight by suspending your body on your toes and forearms. Tense the ab muscles. At this point, depending on the problem, you will either feel relief or excruciating pain. If relief, repeat until the condition goes away.

I know the lower back monster very well.

I have very similar issues and since I play squash fairly regularly I have tried everything from physio to podiatrists etc

I have 3 things which work for me.

If I am on court and have to continue Voltaren tablets/injections work wonders as a temporary solution, mix this with a gel called ICEMAN (its for horses but can be found at any dischem) and you are guaranteed to feel nothing.

As a permanent fix use a chiropractor. I know many ppl find this flaky, but the inflammation/spasm I had was gone immediately. He also gave me excellent exercises to stop this coming back.

there are many crap chiropractors so choose urs carefully. I have been to dozens and can recommend an excellent one if you want?

I had that beginning of the year. Started doing daily stretches ad taijichuan and it went away.
He're some stretches that might work, depending on where exactly the problem lies.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVlX5HNKamw&feature=fvsr[/ame] ( you can do this while sitting too, just sit with you legs crossed like a man, ie. with you ankle on your knee and then, with your back up straight push your knee down slightly and bend you waist((not your upper back)) down. You should feel it it the leg, butt and lower back)

You need to train your core muscles

True, but its frikkin hard when ur back is in a spasm...
Its why i supplemented the chiropractor with back and especially ab strenghtening exercises given to me. The normal stomach crunches etc made the back pains worse....

Get Xrays of the area to eliminate disk problems, 2nd, check them kidneys out, 3rd, get off the heels. 4th, good stretching may help, oh, check out your matress, make sure it isnt too soft.

At best get an MRI scan , or at least x-rays.

I have a prolapsed disc which means the disc has popped allowing some of the gunk inside to leak out the gap and press against the nerves running down the spine. Had an a discectomy to remove the gunk but it still causes problems 6 years later. Next option is a spinal fusion but one back op is enough.

If you are getting pain running down either leg, get it seen to...now.

my wife suffers allot with lower back pain and had her share of voltaren injections and some therapy. she then started googling excercise for the back and came across Pilates and started doing that and so far its worked wonders.

there were times she could not get out of bed and walk around, it was bad.

I also want to suggest you have x-rays taken and after that, you can decide on treatment.

For relief.. Iceman as mentioned above. It will freeze up the muscle(stop spasms) and allow it to heal(its kinda like reporral gel but more effective and doesn't do the heating of muscle like deep heat and its cheaper :D although its apparently for horses.. lol). For a more permanent effect.. you need to strengthen lower back muscles with a combo of stretches and weights.

Jip, I do ... this is the first time the lower back pain has the added 'bonus' of a pain down the leg.

Wil have to get specific programme worked out for me, then, cos I do exercise a lot and it includes weight training.
