Can Someone please confirm what frequency / spectrum each network is using for their LTE connection.

MTN & Vodacom 1800MHz FDD
Cell C 2100MHz FDD
Telkom Mobile 2300MHz TDD

Please correct me if I am wrong.

MTN uses 2100MHz FDD, I am on MTN, and I have an S4, non LTW version getting LTE speeds and using 2100MHz

I do belive you are correct on vodaCom but I ahve no idea on Cell C, I suppose their LTE is whatever the operator they are piggybacking off uses.

and Telkom mobile is definately 2300, was in an article not too long ago

Vodacom/MTN - 1800MHz
Cell C - 2100MHz (they don't "piggy back" only on 2G nothing else)
Telkom Mobile - 2300MHz home network ("piggy back" on MTN 1800MHz)

I connected using a Telkom Mobile SIM (roaming on MTN LTE) in Durban the other day and it worked....

What probably happened is that your device handed down to 3G and you were roaming on 3G using your "all network data bundle", I am 100% sure that MTN does not allow roaming of TM subscribers on their LTE network, only 2G/3G.

Will lock my device to LTE only and test again next time I am in MTN LTE Coverage.....

Will have to test that too to see if Telkom Mobile does indeed allow for roaming MTN LTE since thats the only network that has LTE around here....
