The Lucid Air Sapphire will “outrun a Formula One car” says boss

Well, at least to 80mph. Plus: more on Lucid's future plans

The car is the Lucid Air Sapphire, expected to launch later this summer. The speaker is Lucid Motors bossman, Peter Rawlinson.

“I'm testing a prototype on the road at the moment,” Rawlinson told TG.com in an interview, “If you put that car on the Formula One grid, it’ll out run the rest of the grid up to about 80 miles an hour. Above 80, [the F1 cars] get downforce and have better power-to-weight ratios. But it's quite a machine.”

That makes us quite interested. Previously chief engineer of the Tesla Model S, Rawlinson has plenty of reasons to be happy. He's just closed a chunky $450 million deal with Aston Martin. It’s ultimately given a gold star to the innovative design of Lucid’s electric motor set-up. And the Sapphire?

Rawlinson smiles mischievously, as he confirms that it swallows 0-60mph in a face-melting 1.89 seconds. He wants to share more about Lucid's future plans now the deal is done.

Lucid Air gets a breath of fresh air with new price tags

Lucid Motors, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has decided to give its customers an early holiday gift. And no, it's not a free air freshener with the purchase of a car. It's something much better: a significant price cut across its Lucid Air lineup.

The Lucid Air Pure AWD, which boasts a respectable 480 hp, has seen its price tag drop from the previous €86,600 (plus a rather hefty €1,540 shipping fee) to a more wallet-friendly €76,800. Lucid has even graciously reduced the shipping fee - destination charge - to €1,400. That's right, not only is Lucid cutting the price of the car, but it's also making it cheaper to get it to you. How thoughtful - thank you, Lucid.

No, this isn't an infomercial, but it sure starts feeling like one. If you're looking for something even more budget-friendly, Lucid is set to roll out the Air Pure RWD. According to the company's online configurator, this model will be a cool €4,700 cheaper, with a starting price of €72,100 (excluding that €1,400 destination fee). Mark your calendars because this model will be available in September 2023.

For those who like a bit more oomph in their drive, the 620-hp Lucid Air Touring trim is now starting at €88,500 or a whopping €11,200 less than last time we checked. This means Lucid is now offering two models under the €90,000 mark. And for the high-rollers, the 1,050-hp Lucid Air Grand Touring has also seen a generous price cut, now starting at €117,000. That's another €11,600 lobbed off the price - how generous.

Lucid Air Sapphire's monster final specs revealed: 1,234 hp, 0 to 97 km/h in 1.89 seconds

Lucid's most bonkers version of the Air EV is finally fully official, complete with all of its insane specs. The Lucid Air Sapphire is the Tesla Model S Plaid killer, as it comes with a mind-boggling 1,234 hp and 1,939 Nm of torque, thanks to its three-motor setup.

Acceleration from 0 to 97 km/h takes 1.89 seconds, 0 to 161 km/h takes 3.84 seconds, while a quarter mile is achieved in an unreal 8.95 seconds at 254 km/h. Top speed is 330 km/h. Range is no slouch either, with an EPA-estimated 687 km on one charge.

All of this performance does come at a cost, as you may have expected. The Lucid Air Sapphire will be priced at €232,000 fully equipped, before "tax, title, registration, and other fees" in the US. Availability for markets outside of the US will be communicated in the future, so it looks like this is going to be US-only for now. Production begins in September, with deliveries "to follow soon after", according to Lucid.

Lucid's first SUV to be announced in November, production is scheduled for 2024

Alongside its financial results, Lucid confirmed that the development of its first SUV called Gravity is on schedule. The company confirmed an official announcement is scheduled for this November, presumably revealing all specs and trims - something that the first unveiling failed to deliver. The company also clarified that mass production is due at end of 2024.

Lucid has kept a tight lid over the Lucid Gravity and apart from a couple of spy shots during a road testing, we don't have anything on it. However, we do know that it's going to be a mid-size SUV that's going to compete with the Tesla Model X and potentially offer three-row seating in at least one of its versions.

Lucid Motors developing a more wallet-friendly electric vehicle

Lucid Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer based in California, is apparently itching to get into the ring with Tesla's updated Model 3. CEO Peter Rawlinson has recently hinted at the company's aspiration to roll out a cheaper car.

The Air luxury sedan, which is currently the flagship of Lucid Motors, starts at €72,100 for the Pure variant and rockets all the way up to €232,000 for the Air Sapphire edition. Rawlinson explained in an interview that launching the brand with a high-end product was all about catching investors' attention, but now it's ready to cover lower segments of the market.

Lucid's new base Air Pure EV seems like a hell of a car

The rear-wheel-drive Air Pure comes in at $78,900 and doesn’t skimp on punch

With the launch of the new rear-wheel-drive Pure, the Lucid Air lineup is now complete. The single-motor Pure is the least-expensive version of Lucid’s fetching electric sedan, and it’s available to order right now, starting at $78,900 including a $1,500 destination fee.

To put that price in perspective, the Air Pure RWD is $5,000 less than its dual-motor counterpart, and $17,600 cheaper than the next-step-up Air Touring. It’s also one third of the price of the 1,234hp Air Sapphire, though to be fair, the Air Pure also has one third as much power.

Not that the RWD Air Pure is anything to scoff at, mind you. Lucid’s base model offers 430hp and 406lb ft of torque, meaning this large luxury sedan can scoot to 60mph in 4.4 seconds. More importantly, the single-motor Air Pure has an estimated driving range of 419 miles, according to the US test cycle. That’s better than anything else in its class, including the Tesla Model S.

The Pure’s sole rear-mounted motor is powered by an 88kWh battery pack that can fast-charge at a max rate of 250kW (assuming you can find a fully functional DC charger, anyway). This version also comes standard with 19-inch wheels, which is what you’ll want if you’re going to attempt to hit that 419-mile range number. Even better, the Air Pure has an aluminum roof, not the full-glass one that doesn’t tint enough to keep the cabin cool.
