Lucid Air EV

First European deliveries of the longest-range Lucid Air model have begun

Although Lucid has finished making deliveries of the Air Dream Edition in the United States, Europeans are only starting to get familiar with the limited-run model of the electric luxury car.

Customers in Germany and the Netherlands were the first in Europe to get their Lucid Air Dream Edition vaporizers after the recent launch of product shipping throughout the continent. The Lucid Air will make its debut in Europe with the limited-production Dream Edition, which will be offered in not one but two unique iterations, namely Range and Performance.

The official mileage for the Dream Edition Range with 19-inch wheels was given by the WLTP as 883 kilometers, or 548 miles. Because of this, the Lucid Air is the electric car on the European market that has the greatest range. Two electric motors are what give the model its combined peak power of 696 kW (933 horsepower).

The Dream Edition Performance has a similar dual-motor all-wheel drive system, but it is rated at 828 kW (1,111 hp) of output instead . Because of this, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 miles per hour) in just 2.7 seconds. When equipped with wheels of 19 inches, it has a combined driving range of 861 kilometers, which is equivalent to 535 miles. Both iterations are equipped with a 900V battery architecture, which makes ultra-rapid charging possible.

Customers in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are able to place orders for the Lucid Air. Lucid has just launched its third retail site in Europe in the city of Hilversum, which is located in the Netherlands. This store is also the first integrated service, delivery, and sales facility that the firm has created in Europe.

Lucid offers $7,500 discount for Air Touring and Grand Touring models

Lucid lost out on the current EV credits, none of its cars qualify simply because they are far too expensive. Add to it the ongoing price tussle between Tesla and pretty much everybody else and Lucid may be feeling some pressure.

It’s a tough one for Lucid, the Air is clearly positioned as a luxury vehicle, so is the upcoming Gravity. Lowering prices on luxury vehicles sends a wrong message to potential and existing customers and it lowers the brand value. It’s a move that is very difficult for any brand to recover from.

It seems though, Lucid found a way to offer a discount that is not a discount - technically. The VP of sales, Zak Edson, explained that the company feels its customers were treated unfairly by the Inflation reduction Act and the new EV tax credit. He went on to say that everyone deserves credit for buying an EV.

From now on, and for limited time only, Lucid will offer its own “EV tax credit” in the same, $7,500 sum, for some of its electric cars. Here is where the story falls apart. The official EV tax credit is for electric cars up to $55,000 or electric SUVs for up to $80,000. The cheapest Lucid Air Pure starts at $87,400 - it has no chance for the EV tax credit from the government but Lucid’s own “EV tax credit” discount would surely apply, right? Wrong.

Entry level Lucid Air Pure to offer RWD option with 430 hp

Lucid Air Pure was unveiled by the end of last year and it was always meant as the entry trim for the luxury brand. As such the EV is priced from $92,900 and it comes with the 480 hp AWD drivetrain with EPA rated range of 410 miles. It’s hard to call it an entry level trim when it deals with 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.8 seconds but in the world of Lucid electric cars it is at the bottom of the lineup.

Lucid was supposed to offer an even cheaper version of the Air Pure, the entry trim of the entry trim, the purest and cheapest Lucid available. At the time of launch there were no details available and the company has been quiet about its plans but now we have reports that buyers who placed preorders for the Lucid Air Pure have been sent an email from the company.

The email confirms the availability of the single-motor option and discloses preliminary specification together with the price. The RWD Lucid Air Pure comes with 430 hp and 550 Nm of torque. The quoted 0 to 60 mph acceleration takes 4.4 seconds and projected range is 406 miles. All that for $87,400 or $5,500 less than the AWD version.

The 2023 Lucid Air Touring Might Be the Most Compelling Luxury EV Today

With 620 hp and a price tag $70,000 below the top-tier Air, the Touring makes one hell of a case for itself.

While I have yet to drive the base model Lucid Air Pure, I suspect the Touring model, with its very competitive price and feature set, might be the sweet spot in the Air range. It offers an ideal mix of performance, range, comfort, and styling, plus the bonus of a continued partnership between Lucid and Electrify America to offer complimentary fast-charging for up to three years.

I seriously love the Air, and it remains arguably my favorite electric vehicle to date. While the company has a long way to go before I could give it a wholehearted recommendation without a caveat for quality control issues, I know where my money would go if I were in the market for a luxury electric vehicle.

The 2023 Lucid Air Touring is on sale now with a starting price of $109,125, including $1,650 destination and $75 document fees.

Lucid to lay off 1,300 employees in a cost-cutting bid

Lucid's CEO Peter Rawlinson announced that the company would soon lay off about 1,300 of its employees, which is a hefty 18% of its total workforce of 7,200. Many other companies also announced layoffs, bracing for the upcoming recession, although in terms of percentage that might be the highest yet.

With Tesla's aggressive price cuts and legacy automakers introducing more affordable EVs, startups like Lucid and Rivian are facing big challenges. The lay-offs will cost Lucid anything between $24 and $30 million. The restructuring plan will be complete by the end of the second quarter and will see employees go from pretty much all levels, including executives.

Lucid Gravity enters road testing stage before its launch next year

Lucid has gone quiet about progress on its second EV - the electric 7-seat SUV Gravity. Thankfully that silence didn’t mean bad news, but rather plenty of top-secret engineering work and today the company announced that Gravity began its road testing program in the US. This is the final stage of the development before the vehicle goes official next year.

We first saw the official teaser of Gravity during the launch of Lucid Air Pure last November. It is a large SUV with three rows of seats and the company claims there’s enough room inside for seven adults and their luggage. Apparently, the driving dynamics are akin to a sports car and Lucid is adamant that Gravity will have the greatest driving range of any electric SUV on the market.

That may be a big claim but we need to remember that Lucid has the technology and expertise to back its claim. The Air Dream Edition Range came with an EPA rating of 837 km or 520 miles. The Gravity will likely be larger than the BMW iX xDrive50. It means that for Lucid's claim to come true, Gravity will have to have a greater range than 611 km or 380 miles. Unless we look at the smaller Fisker Ocean with its record-breaking 708 km WLTP rating - this will change though, once Fisker gets an EPA rating.

Lucid is struggling with sales recently, the production numbers of the Air are still low, and yet the company is dealing with an unsold inventory. Gravity is seen as a possible rescue vehicle with the SUV being the most popular segment in the US. Lucid had to let go of yet another batch of its employees recently in an attempt to trim its costs.
