Hello everyone,

so this morning I walked into a local CellC store and said I wanted to update my software to 8.1.

I did this since there is a message on my phone saying i have a software update available. (i thought it was 8.1).

Unfortunately when searching for updates while in-store, there was nothing.:wtf:

They called the call centre and they said that no such update is available.

Which brings me to ask the question: is 8.1 available in South Africa? For the Lumia 1320? On CellC?

If anyone can respond, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you!:)

Directly from Nokia's site:

http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/wp8-availability-in-africa/

Lumia 1320 Country variant 3058.50000.1424.0001 Not applicable Available Available
Lumia 1320 MTN 3058.50000.1424.0001 Not applicable Available Available
Lumia 1320 Vodacom 3058.50000.1424.0001 Not applicable Available Available

Last column (in bold) indicates Cyan update.

Unfortunately Cell© isn't listed there, however since your phone is telling you to update you should be able to update it (although the update might not be 8.1).

You can't update over your mobile data plan, you'll have to be connected to WiFi to do so.

If it brought up an update notification then that update should be listed under setting > phone update.
Is there nothing there?

No, it says connect to WIFI. When I do switch wifi on, I do a search for any available updates - it says phone up to date.

But just a couple of minutes after, it displays notification on screen: "An update is ready for download. Connect to wifi so you can download the update".

Strange coz cellc says there is no update.

Maybe i should go to Vodacom?

I highly doubt anyone at a cell store can help unfortunately.
But I don't really know what to advise.
Is it possible that your WiFi has a VPN or DNS (UnoTelly etc) service to make it appear as being in a different country?

It is entirely possible...however if it is so...it really wasn't me.

Has anyone on this forum (from South Africa) performed an update?

I updated my uncles 1320 for him to 8.1 . he got his phone on contract from Cell C. It require two separate updates to get to 8.1 though

UPDATE: 2 Sept 14

I do see that on the menu end, there are now alphabetical letters separating the different apps/programs on the phone which wasn't there before.

But I still have WP8 only.

IIRC, the app list does not contain alphabetical letters until a certain number of apps (about 45) are installed, then it automatically inserts the alpha letters to make it easier to go to the correct letter grouping.

Been like that since the WP8.0, so you may have just installed an app that took you over the limit.

I think it has been like that since 7.5/7.1. But yeah, there is a threshold before the jumplist activates.

Thank you for all those who gave their input - I think I'm just going to wait a while and see if CellC comes out with any updates in the near future.

Still a great phone on WP8.0 nonetheless.

get the preview for dev app , then you get all the updates first no matter which network you are .

my 630 is currently on 8.10.14157.200

I have a 1320 from CellC I did the update about 2- 3 weeks ago already.

Sometimes the update via PC works. Also I've experienced this on Android phones as well, tells you there is an update, but check again and it says up to date.

Got the small update notification on my 720 via Vodacom SIM.
Switched to WiFi (Telkom Mobile) and ran update. Then I updated the +-400MB update after that.
Painless.

WP8 was great but 8.1 is flipped fantastic. A shame about Cortana not being available though :/
