Temporarily forced to use a 520 - extremely frustrating in general, but the thing is also consuming data at an alarming rate. The usual things - backgound tasks, phone software updates etc - have been disabled, stopped and plugged. I do however play around quite often with HERE Maps - over which I seem not to have any download control. Does it download additional maps automatically and uncontrollable when I scroll to new geographical areas? Could that be the cannibal? If so, how do I control it? Or is there another fox amongst the chickens?

You can preload a map in HERE Maps. If you don't then it will be using data. Not sure how much though.

Here Maps eating dates, Noooooooooooo!

Anyways, for the data. I suspect maps is one of the apps eating data or if you give your phone to kids especially they'll download or just update games because they want to play them. Updating games is a real biatch.

If you really feel it is the maps, you ought to set it to offline. That makes sure data is not used, at all. Even when navigating. I know its hard for the Android guys to comprehend this but a few are coming to the party since Here is also now available on Android and more and more Android fans are coming to enjoy the freedom of dataless cell phone maps (with navigation).

As for the specific games that use data, try avoiding games like candy crush saga, Ice Age and all other I'm building my own world games. Heavy on data.

Also, try not to do back ups too often. Settings, back up. Turn off back ups.

My 2 cents.
