Lump behind my left ear - is it a swollen lymph node.

I read wrathex's thread this morning.

A few weeks ago I discovered a lump behind my left ear at the base of the skull.

Naturally I googled - and based on majority of the results - after people visited the doctor and took tests - it turned out to be inflamed lymph nodes.

The lump is largish, quite firm and a bit tender to touch - but not at all painful. Have you ever had this and had it tested?
 
It can be a lymph node but it may just as well not be. Go to a doctor. Is the couple of hours and the money saved worth your life? Ask yourself that.
 
Go have it tested, it's been a few weeks, if it's still there, it means something is up, even if it is just an inflammation, there is a reason why it is inflamed - go find out what the cause is.

It is cancer. Definitely.

I'm not aware of a lymph node in that location. Better get it checked out just to be sure.
 
Jen, being a medic - I want to say to you "goto the doctor to CONFIRM!"

Google is amazing and it is very helpful, but sometimes, can be the worst thing ever!
I honestly mean, think about it - whenever have you ever google'd a medical condition and found a 'not so bad scenario' (eg: just a 'bump')
You'll google something and only find the 'worst case scenarios'

Rather don't panic, goto the doctor and confirm exactly what it is.

In my experience Google provides the more common non-lethal causes too. Maybe people just don't know how to use Google properly when searching for these things?

Sorry J.Lo your condition is not always cancerous, as many people fear it to be. it could be an ear infection, recurrent scalp infections, or tumor of lymph node... best you see a medic soon... do an x-ray if necessary... just to be sure

Don't give her false hope. It is definitely cancer. She probably hasn't responded yet because she is dead already.

If only she had gotten to that shower quicker she could have washed the cancer away. Oh well...

exactly she should have gone to the doctor instead of posting here on the forum asking for the members advise. after all we are all medical practitioners and have thoroughly examined her and know exactly that she has stage 7 cancer and there is nothing anyone can do for her now. all she can do is continue her fruitful life of hiking, traveling, partying, etc while those who are actually suffering with this dreaded disease don't have a hope in hell of a cure.

don't look for any sympathy from some people here missy. if you thing that not going to the doctor, and looking for information on the internet is going to diagnose any condition and solve or cure it, then you only have yourself to blame if there is anything seriously wrong with you. this is the internet not real life.

Well there are some cancers that can be overcome. :p

I personally don't rush out to doctors at the first sign of a lump. I give it some anti-inflammatory drugs and see what happens. If those do nothing only then do I later go to a doctor. At the end of the day the doc is probably going to want a biopsy and those are not fun. I'd rather rule out all the simple stuff I can do at home before I let someone cut a chunk out of my head :p
 
I am quite positive it's not the dreaded C. We have no history of cancer in the family and I have been for a full medical with blood tests of late and nothing untoward was detected. Based on the google results, it is a very common occurrence - so I was just seeing if anyone or how many on here have experienced this and I would have waited a while to see if it became smaller/dissapeared over time. But based on the advice here perhaps an appointment with the hospital is a good idea.

PS - It's easier to ask such a question anonymously of people here than having to worry my nearest and dearest with such questions - perhaps causing them undue worry
