Sky HD is 1080i. Fox HD is 1080i. 720i is not "Full HD". I love my high horse.

You also don't know what you're talking about. 1080i doesn't have a higher bitrate than 720p, it does, however, have half the framerate.

FULL HD is 1080p and pretty much nobody broadcasts in that standard since it uses so much bandwidth.

Progressive scan is always going to be better for fast moving pictures.. and Multichoice choose which standard to use depending on the content...

On record where? Ideally MC should be broadcasting movies in 1080i25 as the source has only a framerate of 24p. Sport should remain in 720p50.

They should, but they don't AFAIK. Multichoice has not broadcast anything in 1080i as far as I'm aware.

Take a look at this interview with Multichoice's Chief Technology Officer, Gerdus van Eeden:

Gerdus van Eeden, the company’s chief technology officer, said the company is broadcasting a 1080i signal at the moment but it will be switching to 720p in the future, as this format works better for sports and action-movie broadcasts.

However, MultiChoice has the flexibility to switch between the two at will and it will use whichever is best to broadcast the particular type of content.

Don't want to plit hairs about this Ponder, but all BLIXEMPIE's posts implied that 1080i was better than 720p. He also implied that 720p was not full HD, while 1080i was... All of this is factually incorrect. He also got things mixed up by referring to 720i - a standard which actually doesn't exist.

M-Net HD doesn't even broadcast in Full HD... It's in 720p HD, which can actually explain why M-Net HD's bitrate is half that of Discovery HD, which is in Full 1080i HD.

Bitrate is completely unrelated to 1080i vs 720p, btw.

There's the 720i reference, and the implication of this is that Sky and Fox's 1080i broadcasts are full HD. It is not.

Another thing Blixempie, you can't compare the amount of HD services on DSTV to the ones you've mentioned before. They are much bigger markets then ours. Sky has around 10 million subscribers. DirecTV currently has more than 18 million subscribers. Not sure about Foxtel, but Australia is a first world country. Multichoice has somewhere between 2 and 3 million in the whole of Africa. Hopefully that will give some perspective. We will have more HD services shortly and I know that Multichoice is actually doing some good work here. By middle of next year the picture should be very different... Pun intended.

Actually the Olympics in August last year was broadcast in 1080i. Quite a few hobbyists reported this. Check out techies.co.za and dvb.atspace for more info. On the old DSTV forums (now archived), Multichoice also confirmed that the Olympics were broadcast in 1080i. Their FAQ's also state that "...the standard for the MultiChoice broadcast of HD content is 720p50, however, MultiChoice may from time to time broadcast in 1080i25."
