M-WEB launches 1GB mailbox

/me wonders what's the catch :-/
MWEB actually providing a reasonable service? and FREE?

A pity Google got to it a year ago...with double the space + it's free.

However it's good to see the big guns responding to the need of increased space.

Well since MWEB runs off SAIX it doesn't really benefit the user after their cap because they are hardcapped. But I guess that alot of people may have been complaining that they lost alot of their emails after being capped, so this kind of ensures that their emails will be there at the beginning of the next month.

You can send 3 emails now and get capped.

You would swear that they had just landed the first man on Mars, or broken the land speed record, or heaven forbid, perhaps just been caught red handed thinking of something remotely revolutionary, but alas not, this is after all just South Africa.

gmail ftw. its now got intergrated chating, and calender :D

Pathetic. Simple as that.
Gmail is quicker and according to my account

"You are currently using 357 MB (13%) of your 2722 MB."

1Gig... bah...

Gmail for me! Nice searching and archiving feature as well on the webmail interface.

Been using it for a couple of years now since beta, when it came out with 1GB and now bumped it up to 2.5+GB at present.

Pity for them you can get a Yahoo 2GB account for $9.95/year. Do they actually think people will sign up with them for the 1GB account. It's not like they announced free email downloading. Why is innovation in this country so slow.

Who needs MWeb

Jeesh! where are these geezers from. Sitting on Gmail for months now, Why tie youself to one service provider?
in the words of my 13 year old 'ITS MUF'

It would have been ok if their ADSL was running on IS, at least people would still have access to their mail box once capped. However since they're running off SAIX and hardcap their users, it effectively means international bandwidth costs the same as local bandwidth, meaning people may as well use Gmail or Yahoo

Do MWeb also agree to spy on you and use the information in your mailbox for whatever purpose they choose, including their own commercial purposes? The latter would include stealing any ideas you may discuss in your e-mail, to be used to enrich Google.

Wow, what is that, R3 worth of hard drive space? The fact that local ISPs were even still offering tiny Mb mailboxes in the days of massive and extremely cheap hard drives was ridiculous. Will we also see headlines if burglars decide to steal a bit less from each house they rob?

Yes Noxi, that's all they do, plug in a cheap 5400RPM IDE drive into that P4 Celeron which equates to your R3.

Think a little outside the box.

My opinion stop looking for things to bitch at.

Big fat hairy deal

The new 1GB mailbox is available free for M-WEB members.

Just like the free modem you get in the big black box. Or the free cellphone with your Weekender Plus Deluxe contract. You will pay for it, make no mistake about it.

No one has enough space to keep a copy of all your emails. They only keep a record of the address which sent it to you and the size of the email like ALL other ISPs do.

No, actually they plug in a couple of hundred faster drives that they get at more reasonable nearer to wholesale price. Still costs them less per user. Thats why google can give them out for free.
