M-WEB launches 1GB mailbox

Yes, of course SA companies share the luxury of cheaper hardware and bandwidth that international co's have?

If MWEB charged for this then i can see why you guys are bitching but they have upp'd the mailbox sizes for their users at no costs.

If they dont do anything you bitch,
If they do something you bitch.

The bitching is more about the way they are advertising it as such a great deal when there's bigger and better out there. It's only SA co's which can make such a big deal about something like this only to attract more customers. Fine, let them announce it, but then also announce the "free bandwidth" which you will need in order to actually use it. Believe me, nothing is free. Users will pay for that 1GB through the extra bandwidth they will now use in order to access it despite the fact that it's on their "own" network. Reminds me of when they announced that the new pay per gig system is actually "of benefit" to their customers. Yeah sure, only because they were not on the all-you-can-eat system which a lot of their customers were probably leaving them for. So trust me, in the end they will benefit from this, not the users. :p

M-WEB launches 1GB mailbox (M-WEB membersonly)

What a bargain, let me run off right now and sign up a contract so that I can take advantage of that wonderful 1GB. NOT

MWEB runs off IS and SAIX, for both dial-up and adsl (and other services), but majority is off IS.
That's the bottom line.

You make no sense at all.

Are you telling me that because people now have a bigger maibox they're now going to be using more bandwidth? Are they going to suddenly experience a SURGE in mail being sent them?

If anything it's going to save users bandwidth as instead of popping their mail
continuously they can now keep everything online.

End of the day it's a upgrade for their existing users that i'm sure they'll appreciate.

While you're @ it, go bleat @ every other ISP that isn't providing it rather than the ISP that is.

ROFL thats classic! :D
It's like buying a big house, and thinking you're suddenly going to attract a whole lot of visitors, even if you have no friends!
But I agree, if you get something for free then either take it or leave it, don't always look for reasons to moan.

Do MWeb also agree to spy on you and use the information in your mailbox for whatever purpose they choose, including their own commercial purposes? The latter would include stealing any ideas you may discuss in your e-mail, to be used to enrich Google.

I think you are overly paranoid. Google and their employees do not have the ability to sit and READ through your daily chat with your mother. They do have robotic algorithms clever enough to pick out words for advertising, empasis on "robotic" . If there is anyone you should be worried about it is your local boss/work IT dept/collegues who READ your email for racist jokes.... i bet if you go read your regular companies' IT policy it will be FAAAR
more intrusive than Google. At least i can make a racist joke on gmail...

Oh and at least Google are TELLING you they can crawl through your emails , other companies can too they just don't tell you...[including MWEB]

As for Mweb's 1GB thing, i bet their advertising [as opposed to googles] will be taking more of your bandwidth than the actual email. I already imagine seeing huge FLOATING banners and flashing red things in every corner of the screen with my email view frame squeezed in some small space somewhere in the middle of the screen.

Ok, so maybe you missed the other bandwidth complaints or they didn't make any sense to you. You also probably missed the part about the emails going "missing" because there wasn't enough space for them so I can understand why it sounds impossible for you that someone might "suddenly" get more mail. Now all your mail will make it through together with some more - do I even dare to mention the word - SPAM. So I have no doubt that you'll "miraculously" receive more mail now unless your mailbox were NEVER used to its full capacity.

As for keeping your mail in your mailbox, you might want to explain to me how you managed to read your mail all these years without actually downloading it because if you do download it then you can't make the claim of saving bandwidth. But hey if it's such a great offer as you claim then by all means migrate over to them if you're not an existing user. But I'm sure their existing users will be very happy ...until the day that they find out they can't check their mail as they are capped because of all the new mail that they haven't provisioned for.

Then again it's really none of my business as my problem isn't with the announcement itself, but rather the big deal that it's being made out to be. I just won't rocommend them to anyone despite the "humungous" mailbox. :p

Cheers

Same thing applies to Gmail, Yahoo and every other mail provider offering large inboxes. You can't access it once you're capped on SAIX. Because of hardcapping on SAIX, local bandwidth is effectively the same price as international bandwidth. But if you have an IS based account as backup, you have tons of local bandwidth available - this provides a mechanism of still gaining access to your mail locally. Trust me I'm not a very big MWeb fan, but at least you have a chance of still gaining access to your mail by using local bandwidth. Alternatively one can now ditch MWeb as their ISP, but still keep their mailbox and use IS as their ISP so that capping doesn't become an issue when it comes to being shut out of your mail. However if this still doesn't make sense to you then don't use it ;) It's a free upgrade and you not compelled to use it.

Like I said in my previous post my problem is not with the upgrade of their mailbox, but rather the big deal that is being made of it. Like they now expect people to sign up with them for the mailbox. I still know that it is not free because you WILL pay for the extra bandwidth you WILL use if you're on their network. However if that still doesn't make sense to you then I won't try to elaborate any further. ;)

LOL ok like mccrack said let's agree to disagree, I can see this discussion going around in circles.

But it seems like this forum has becoming a dumping ground for people to constantly moan about things. It's almost like it's become a force of habit. Then when something does eventually change, their natural response would be to find something else to moan about. A big complaint about Mweb in the past was that people were tied to them due to email addresses (because of Mweb buying out other ISP's). Changing ISP's wasn't an option because other ISP's were offering similar inbox sizes and it wasn't worth the effort. Now when something changes allowing people to free themselves from Mweb and change ISP's, yet still keep a decent inbox size as well as their established email address, then people will find some other other thing to moan about. AFAIK they have spam and virus filters for their mailboxes.

What do you otherwise suggest Prometheus? It seems as though nothing is ever good enough for you, even if its free ;) You'll always find something to complain about. Do you know of anyone else offering a 1gig inbox locally? The key word being "locally" so that people have still have a means of accessing their email by using IS local bandwidth. And if they continue with MWeb as an ISP, at least their mail would still be there at the beginning of the next month as opposed to being deleted. In that instance I, and many others, don't CARE if it uses bandwidth at the beginning of the next month because at least the mail is still there. I would personally hate for an email to be deleted due to inbox restrictions because it could be something important. And if bandwidth really is important to the person, they can login online and delete anything that looks unnecessary, before downloading anything to their PC.

As far as making a big deal of it is concerned, I think they have a right to since I don't see anyone else offering a mailbox of that size locally. Again, key word being "locally". Now I don't know how much clearer to make things, so that's the last time I'm going to try and elaborate any further :)

Mweb though it was so impressive they sent me the email twice.

All my mweb email autoforwards to a gmail account anyway and I dont see any cause to change that. Gmail will follow me around regardless of my isp of the day.

Hey, I'm don't complain about "everything" and there was a lot of other people "complaining" here about a larger mail box.

Now let me try and word this so we don't go around is circles here. I understood your second last paragraph the first time you posted it, no need to elaborate there. Now I don't see anyone flocking over there just for the mailbox and I don't think that they will stay with them for the mailbox either. So without complaining about it I think that for most people it's too little too late as most people has gotten used to their small mailboxes by now. The good thing that's going to come out of this is that other ISPs will also start offering larger mailboxes now. Maybe not 1GB, but even an increase to 100MB will suffice as you won't need the whole 1GB initially.

About people complaining too much. This country really seems depressed so who can blame them. And I'll rather not comment on their spam and virus protection, but if it's still implemented on a network level then the reports of large deals almost going down the drain because of an email not going through says it all and sending them a mail about it doesn't help either because it ironically gets deleted as spam.

Actually Vodacom was there first again:
1 gigabyte of storage space
Up to 5 aliases
Advanced spam and virus protection
Daily mailbox status alert via SMS
It's R29/month or if you have a 500meg data bundle (which is like an ISP subscription) you can get it for "free" again. Next thing MWeb will try and pull an MTN and claim to be first with this.
