M1 Highway rehabilitation delayed

Due to delays in construction on two sections of Johannesburg's M1 highway‚ motorists can expect little relief in peak-hour traffic in coming months.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) announced the progress it has made on the rehabilitation projects on Thursday.

JRA managing director Sean Phillips said the delays are the result of geotechnical complications on the Oxford and Federation road bridges project‚ near Killarney‚ and financial difficulty on the Double Decker bridge project‚ over the city centre.

The Oxford and Federation road bridge construction was expected to be completed by February next year. The deadline has now been extended to September 2017. Striking workers also delayed work here for six weeks between April and August.

Cant believe we stuck with that 2 lane mess till September 2017!!!
 
They started this work in March this year. I am no road engineer but for work for a small stretch of road to take 1.5 years is crazy.
 
Hey, Rand Water has been laying new water pipes in Alberton for the last 3 years.... so I guess it's doable.

Yes - but, southbound is 2 lanes from the M2 and 2 from the M1 - reducing it by a lane is going to cause catastrophic levels of congestion.

Just realized the rehab project didnt finish, even though the original deadline of March 2017 was changed to September 2017! Freaking useless!
 
I heard an ad on the radio last night indicating that the M1 northbound is now back to 3 lanes, the southbound section will be opened next week.

Can anybody confirm?
