Mac email/Wi-Fi issue

hi,

When I use my own wifi hotspot at my house to connect I don't have a problem downloading mail from either Mail 3.2 or MS Entourage for Mac. But when I'm at my friends house I still have access to the other internet services like web and Skype, but I can't download or send email.

I looked around in the email client preferences and system preferences but can't see any commands associated with my problem. Can anybody help? Thanks

Are you getting any errors? Who is your e-mail with? If you use your ISP's e-mail, they may be restricting access to their own network. Certainly for sending, it will be restricted.

There was an exactly similar issue once with a friend of mine. Turned out you had to disable encryption of mail somewhere in the preferences. I discovered it totally at random after much trying.

If they use Cybersmart for example you have to change your SMTP settings to smtp3.cybersmart.co.za, Mweb has the same issues.

yes i get errors in Mail: "There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “Louis” or try again.

The server error encountered was: The attempt to read data from the server “pop3.louisvorster.com” failed."

and in Entourage: Error: -3253

I'm not with Cybersmart. I have 2 emails on my own domain names, one on Mac Mail and one on MS Entourage, neither one of them work when i'm at my friends house, but when I'm at my own place or when I use my Vodacom usb modem they work.

Not very helpful. Open a terminal and do:

telnet pop3.louisvorster.com 110
+OK Hello there. <20931.1263902577@localhost.localdomain>
user: your_user_name
pass: your_password

What happens?

it simply say: Connection closed by foreign host.

"Trying 74.53.8.34...
Connected to pop3.louisvorster.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Hello there. <20931.1263902577@localhost.localdomain>
user: info@louisvorster.com
pass: xxxxxx
Connection closed by foreign host."

Right, so your ISP's server is rejecting you. talk to them. Unless you copied the [ / email ] quotes in there...
