I'm in the market for a new desktop at the moment. Common sense tells me that the top of the line iMac is more than sufficient for my needs but the allure of the Mac Pro is proving hard to resist.

I'm trying to tell myself that the newer technology of the Mac Pro (latest Nehalem vs old Core Duo) and the ability to upgrade makes the extra cost worth it. In reality though the most taxing tasks I'm likely to throw at my computer would be converting divx files and the odd bit of home move editing.

What do you guys think? Sensible iMac or over-the-top Mac Pro?

iMac is a 3-4 year machine, Mac Pro is a 5-7 year machine.

I am also looking at buying a new mac, but price dictates that I get the iMac.

For 20K you get 24inch 2.66 core 2 duo, 4 gig ram, 640 hard-drive. and nvidia geforce 9400 graphics.

Damn good value for money imo.

Amen, iMac 24" = perfect computer.

Then just get some great speakers - Behringer MS20's I think. And a good mouse.

With the launch of the new iMac range, I would definitely go with those... they are now well worth the money. Fast processors, 4GB of DDR3 RAM... you can now get the 24" model for R20k. I am very tempted at the moment.

This range is more than enough for most users... and should last 5-6 years at least.

Imho the deciding factor is what you need it for today. Even a mac pro is going to be horribly obsolete after five, let alone seven, years.

I'm starting year 3 of my 24" iMac next month, and I reckon it'll be fine for at least 2 or 3 more years.

I was on year 6 with my PowerBook before it got stolen.. was still grafting away like a little champ!

/just putting it out there.

That cool - my 1400cs still runs perfectly but I find it makes a better paperweight than a computer. :)

I am on year 9 with a eMac and year 3 with mac book pro.
Thats why I am getting new iMac soon(need to save up for one more month - I dont buy anything on credit).

Okay, common sense has prevailed and I'm going with the 3Ghz iMac. Thanks for all the input guys!

P.S. My 3 year old Macbook Pro has also never given me a days trouble and is still going strong!

Get the 24" one, it's worth the extra moolah over the 20" one.

20" maxes out at 2.66Ghz so yeah I'm going for the 24":)

I also believe the quality of the LCD panel used in the 24" is much better than the 20".

True. I would start it up in store, sometimes the LCD has a bit of discolouring on it. They should swop it out for you immediately.

What happens if you buy it online lol, no checking it then, until it arrives...

Haha, same as with YOUR own shop. :)

Was that a rhetorical question then?

Anyway read the fine print. Apple has a dead pixel policy.

Up to 8 bright and 10 dark stuck/dead pixels are acceptable to Apple
according to the document above, which I sourced here:
