Mac Pro vs iMac

Haha, same as with YOUR own shop. :)

Was that a rhetorical question then?

Anyway read the fine print. Apple has a dead pixel policy.
http://bayimg.com/eAkmlAaBc

Up to 8 bright and 10 dark stuck/dead pixels are acceptable to Apple
according to the document above, which I sourced here:
http://spyder.wordpress.com/2008/07/19/apple-have-tightened-up-their-dead-pixel-policy/ (see the comments section).

I'm going to jump in here from the side.

1. please post links that work.

2. If you post anything relating to policy, then please make sure that it's credible. Avoid Wordpress, blogspot etc.

1. Both links work.

2. Credibility to be established by those who find information pertinent.

You're welcome to Google or research your own information. ;)

Well that brings me to my next debate. Do I just buy a stock iMac with the GT130 graphics card and enjoy the benefits of being able to easily replace it for things like dead pixels OR do I special order an iMac with the (apparently much better) ATI Radeon 4850 and take my chances that everything will be working.

Your logic board will be special and AFAIK more expensive/longer ETA to replace, but the LCD is the same. No Problem.

1. no they don't

2. google around anecdotal accounts?

I googled for "Apple dead pixel policy" those links all came up.
No official Apple links came up though and even Apple forum links
had no information - just anecdotal rants.

They both work for me. Maybe you're behind a firewall?
(BayImg is hosted by ThePirateBay so perhaps that site is off limits in your area).

Anyway call Apple and ask them about their Official Dead Pixel Policy.

Also read this:
http://weblog.infoworld.com/gripeline/2006/05/22_a403.html
and you'll see that
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1721?viewlocale=en_US
doesn't talk about dead pixel counts but threatens extra charges for having pixels reviewed by Apple support.
The doc hosted on BayImg was also hosted on
http://www.macmerc.com/pixel_policy.html
but as you can see was removed by "Apple Legal".
Why would Apple Legal remove that link? Why doesn't Apple have a clear-cut dead pixel policy on its site?
I have no idea.

:)

:)

There are no official links, as all the products in the list are end of life.

Yes TPB is off limits at my ISP.

I don't think screenshots are admissible but would stand corrected.

However, a fair pixel policy would be good.

That's the pic from BayImg. I can't even tell that is a screenshot. It may not even be genuine at all but Apple did force one site to remove it (see prev post) so maybe it's true. Certainly people who retail Apple products here may know if that is a legitimate picture or not. Anyway it's not verifiable and may be a joke or it may be true.

Best option is to buy a screened Mac in a physical shop where you can evaluate the model before taking it home or buying it from a place which offers a refund policy - that way if there is a dead pixel you can get your cash back before buying the machine from another branch. Pity that Apple - which sells premier products - doesn't have the customer service of Mercedes Benz or premier car retailers. Or maybe they do have a clear cut dead pixel policy. Who knows....
