right - i managed to get a replacement on my smelly mac pro - got the new nehalem model.. and guess what, the dvd drive makes terrible clunking noises when waking from sleep or booting up - on day 1!

i just can't believe this! I'm at the end of my rope with apple/core - i wouldn't recommend apple to anyone anymore, wait for windows 7!

All my Macs have made some unworldly noises when waking up - I think it's just that particular drive they used.

I've never, ever heard that clunking sound on any optical drive before.
My previous mac pro 2.8 made no such sounds - this happens when starting up/waking up/inserting a disc - i just spent a fortune on this goddamn machine. Do you honestly think it's normal? I think it's a shoddy drive and will try and get the machine replaced tomorrow. This new mac uses an LG drive the previous generation used pioneer, so i don't think your anecdote holds true in this case.

Relax dude, I just said mine makes some funny noises. As it happens, all the ones I've had were Matsushita drives, so I guess it won't be the same.

sorry if i came across snappy :D - i'm just kinda stressed with all the apple problems i've had of late!

So they gave you the new model at the same price? Same or better specs?

BTW - I am a windows 7 user and I wouldnt hold your breath if you're thinking its any sort of replacement for Osx.

Sounds like uv had a bad run of luck, take it back get it replaced again.

I got the previous model a month ago and it's quiet as a church mouse. So much so it lives in my room and never goes off :D

Hope you get sorted out!

we tested a couple and they all make that unpleasant grinding noise... guess i'll have to live with it.....

Mine uses a NEC DVD-Burner. No issues with startup noises.

LG drives are noisy. Replace it with another drive. Should solve your noise problem. Easier replacing the drive than fighting with Core and maybe cheaper than all the calls you will have to make, and petrol for taking and collecting your machine from them.

Well I hope the drive stops clicking, because...Nehalem Mac Pro.... Oh yeah!

the drive on my swap out is a bit quieter, but stil makes clicking/grindng sounds on startup and wake from sleep - i'll live with it and replace it at my own cost if necessary, maybe with a bluray, because dealing with core can be such an inconvenience - other then that, the machine is running great and is really snappy performance wise! Seeing 16 processors in windows bootcamp is an interesting experience :D

just an update - did some heavy installing of my apps today - and man this optical drive is terrible - i have never heard such a loud, unpleasant sounding drive! my otherwise super-quiet mac starts making terrible whirring/grinding sounds when installing from cd or dvd - this is my 3rd mac pro from core in less then a month! should i just live with it? You can't test machines at core without a big fuss so it's a crapshoot.... i think apple must dump their defective macs on the south african market.....

Take it back, complain complain complain. For the kind of money you pay, you can't let them get away with it.

PM me your details and the serial of the machine you have.
