Mac versus PC

I run legit Windows on legit brand name components, such as Kingston, Gigabyte, Acer, Intel, Creative, Matrox etc.

I don't install warez. I don't install cracks. I don't run stupid registry utilities
and other garbage. I have updated AV software and FW software.

Windows just sucks and that is one of the biggest reasons WHY PCs suck.

you have bad luck with pc's. i have asus mb with gigabyte nvidia gc and no probs for two years now. laptop is an acer and works great, four years old btw
never had to reinstall xp, ever.

I have consitent bad luck with PCs but great luck with Macs. :)

BTW could you explain to me, why does IE run out of memory
on a 2GB machine when you open up too many tabs and re-use them.
Say you end up opening and closing 30 tabs while having about 7-8 open
at any given time. At some stage IE runs out of RAM and stops drawing the
menu and even rendering the HTML. The other apps run out of RAM
too.

Stupid eh?

The only way to fix this is to close IE and then go to the Process Explorer
and kill IExplore. Then relauch it and its fresh again.

Reminds me of the days of Win 3.1 when you would run out
or resources by opening and closing windows and programs
(Windows would run out of stack space for the resources).

I also have FF. It's trying to update itself each time it starts, each time it fails to update.

Nah, why does IE do this? Well because it's written by an INCOMPETENT
company called Microsoft.

i don't like ie full stop.
ff problem, using a proxy? on adsl? try no proxy setting.
or just dl the latest ff 3.03 and install over the old.
try doing the same in ff now that you did in ie

My PC has been running for 5 years without an OS reload (pirated version of Windows 2000, all sorts of dodgy apps, cracks, warez, and generally unhealthy stuff). It runs 24/7 and I reboot every 2 weeks or so, just to be safe. My laptop has been running Windows 98 for 9 years now without a reload (OK, so its a R 40 000 Compaq from before they were bought out - their top of the range business laptop). My 4 office HPs have been fine for 5 years as well (legit copies of XP).

I agree 100% with wcoetzee, "it's all about the hardware". Genuine Intel board and chip, on board graphics, LAN, sound etc, 1 dimm of Kingston RAM, 1 Seagate HDD.

Well, that's how it started out. Now its got a dodgy PCI modem from a Pentium 1, a separate NIC and separate sound (lightning strike) and extra ram, and its still working without a hitch. Had an issue with McAfee that caused it to run at 100% for hours on end, still no issues. I honestly don't know what people do to their PCs that manages to f them up soooo much, but mine has taken all sorts of abuse, and never stopped once.

Now lets discuss price. You are all preaching that the Mac is the ideal computer for the average Joe (not the average computer user, the average Joe, the most basic of computer users). What's it going to cost him? R 10 000, R 15 000, then he needs to buy Windows (the R 4 000 new licence type, not the R 1 500 DSP type, to be legit), all sorts of apps and a stylish, overpriced, Apple monitor (so that it all matches). And the PC route: R 5 000, maybe R 8 000, with Windows, add the cheaper apps and cheaper monitors, and the PC user can buy 2 PCs for the price of 1 Mac.

So, what about the hardcore user, or enthusiast, or gamer. Most of their software is written for Windows, so that's what they'll be using most of the time. Why would they buy OSX then? In future, they might want to upgrade; that comic above shows how to upgrade a Mac, the PC route is easier, cheaper, and involves a lot less travel (the parts get sent to my door).

Mac fanboys need to face reality, Macs are specialized pieces of equipment for niche markets, they do media better (I have never, and will never need to do media) and they look better (if you like your stuff to say, "I choose style over functionality and value"). But, for 90% of the computer users out there, the PC is the better choice. And I do mean choice; us PC users don't use PCs because we have to, 90% of the computer users worldwide chose the PC because it better suited our needs.

Hardware makes little difference, Windows is still an inferior OS.

I have a custom built quad core machine with a p5q mobo, when the components were still new I would get BSODS often in Vista and when running XP in a virtual box using Linux it would get a BSOD. But after the latest bios update the BSODS have stopped and Windows runs as it should and is very stable for a winbox but it still is an inferior OS, I switched to linux because it never crashed from the start even with my old bios.

I actually have a Mac and the thing I love most is OSX, the thing that makes OSX the best OS for me is how applications are managed, they are (most times) just a little application file that I can drop anywhere, so if I format my PC my applications don't have to reinstalled they will be exactly in the folders I keep them and I can get back to work straight away, now that is superior.

And none of the available ones perform as well as MAC OS X

Yes, in your opinion.
Why can't you have your preferences and I have mine?
If you like McDonalds, does that mean I have to hate KFC?

Come on people, the mac guys are happy with their machines, the PC guys are happy their machines, everyones happy. So whats the problem?

Custom hardware is only possible with a PC. Stick to standard hardware and everything runs like clockwork on Windows. You'll never have a reason to call it inferior or lacking. PCs gives you that option. Mac expressly forbids it. Apple's like autocratic communism in that way; we tell you what you want, what we'll give you, what you'll pay for it, how long it'll last, and what you'll upgrade to after that.

PCs are more democratic. You decide what you want, choose your vendor, choose how long you keep it for, and upgrade as you please.

After my first post, I looked at Mac prices again. I nearly fainted. Cheapest desktop: The slow, upgrade unfriendly, 80 GB HDD, mini mac - R 8 999 plus several grand for keyboard, mouse, monitor (and windows :-). Cheapest laptop: Never looked at specs, Macbook - R 18 999. Yes, you read that right, nineteen grand.

You fanboys should be ashamed of yourselves, telling folk that they should try the Mac. Are you trying to bankrupt them? Like I said, "very niche products".

We are being ripped of locally, Apple is cheaper abroad.

With regards to custom PCs, Apple allowed Mac compatible PCs in the 90's it failed but Apple may pursue it again, Dell is interested in manufacturing OSX compatible laptops.

Macs are not corporate-friendly machines, unfortunately.

Tell that to the lawyers, oil executives, billionaire's, doctor's, wine makers and architects who are my clients.

I'd assume we are getting ripped off, Monopolies are Core Groups speciality. Monopoly on Apple, monopoly on Nintendo, monopoly on tom tom.

Although that one didn't work out for them - HA HA HA, HA HA :-) HA HA HA. Why didn't it work out? Because Avnic was prepared to compete on price and they weren't <further manical laughter>. Take that "we don't compete on price" Core Group.

But you can't really compare US Mac prices to local PC prices. That's like blaming PC vendors for allowing competition. Viva capitalism Viva.

StbA, you should have stopped with doctors; wine makers and architects don't really help your argument. :-)
