So I went to 5FM's website to Stream, and saw that competition to win the MacBook Air, so I decided to go read up on it at Apples site. I watched the demo movie about it, and while it all seems nice and snazzy, the only problem I had with it is that it doesn't come with a Optical Drive - which, to me, is incredibly stupid.
Any company can come along and say "We have a laptop that is no thicker than your index finger" when the laptop doesn't have an OD in it - what good is a computer without an OD?
Yes, you can buy the external OD but that is an added expense on top of the $1700 starting price their asking. Having a look @ http://www.digicape.co.za/storefront.php i see the MacBook Air starting at R17,999. 18-grand, for a laptop without a optical drive? Are they insane?
An issue I see arises here: the computer crashes (major virus, whatever), consumer won the laptop off a competition but cant afford the external OD, and doesn't have a home PC with a wireless router .. so now what? Go to a Mac store where they will overcharge the consumer to do something he/she could have been able to do themselves? Perhaps, for those not so computer-minded folk, this would be good - but for me, and other people in the IT field, this would be a waste of money.
Until they manage to make a laptop as thin as a MacBook Air with a built-in OD, I'm much happier sticking with a desktop PC.
This isn't a gripe or a whine nor a starting thread for a debate - it's just my thoughts about the MacBook Air on a forum. Your comments are welcome.
