So I went to 5FM's website to Stream, and saw that competition to win the MacBook Air, so I decided to go read up on it at Apples site. I watched the demo movie about it, and while it all seems nice and snazzy, the only problem I had with it is that it doesn't come with a Optical Drive - which, to me, is incredibly stupid.

Any company can come along and say "We have a laptop that is no thicker than your index finger" when the laptop doesn't have an OD in it - what good is a computer without an OD?

Yes, you can buy the external OD but that is an added expense on top of the $1700 starting price their asking. Having a look @ http://www.digicape.co.za/storefront.php i see the MacBook Air starting at R17,999. 18-grand, for a laptop without a optical drive? Are they insane?

An issue I see arises here: the computer crashes (major virus, whatever), consumer won the laptop off a competition but cant afford the external OD, and doesn't have a home PC with a wireless router .. so now what? Go to a Mac store where they will overcharge the consumer to do something he/she could have been able to do themselves? Perhaps, for those not so computer-minded folk, this would be good - but for me, and other people in the IT field, this would be a waste of money.

Until they manage to make a laptop as thin as a MacBook Air with a built-in OD, I'm much happier sticking with a desktop PC.

This isn't a gripe or a whine nor a starting thread for a debate - it's just my thoughts about the MacBook Air on a forum. Your comments are welcome. :)

Sabbz, how about a link to the 5fm competition? :D

Debbie,

http://www.5fm.co.za/listenlive/popup/index.htm

When it loads, there is a box in the bottom-left asking: "Where do you live", select your Country, then click on OK, then enter your Date of Birth, check "I accept..." and click on OK.

You will be presented with a box with 3 buttons at the bottom, click on Register, follow the information and guides then enter.

The competition is three games you have to play, and you can play it as much as you want and you have to the highest score - at the moment it's around 56k - I only got 11k and gave up, lol - I'm not that eager to win the Air. :D

Like many apple products the Air fills a niche. If someone is giving one away I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Then again - having used laptops for the past 8 years I can't bear the thought of being tethered to a desk.

I hardly ever use the optical drive in my MacBook Pro so I wouldn't miss it.

The MacBook Air is probably targeted at people who need an ultra-portable notebook for when they are traveling, not those who need a single machine for all their needs.

Macs are for people who cant do financial math and who like things like pretty beads.

I agree, but placing such an expensive price-tag on something so limited seems rather messed up. Then again, I've noticed Apple products are always overpriced, particularly their computers. oh well, such is life :p

I think you'll find that Apple's hardware is reasonably priced compared to equivalent alternatives in their home market. Unless of course you wish to prove otherwise?

No he won't, no he can't. :)

He got no money, his face is sad and he likes to code apps whenever he needs to do something on his pc.
We covered this in another thread. ;)
