Macbook Air review

Yep, yep and yep....
I like portable, and this little gem...
eish.

Since I have kids to feed, anyone have a linky to any competitions to win one? :D

For crying in a bucket, not another Mac plug. Will someone tell these Mac evangelists that there are better notebooks, thin notebooks out there. True, they probably aren't as pretty but they certainly have more functionality.

And don't run OSX?
Dunno, but different strokes for different folks. IMO Windoze users are like race horses with blinkers... if it doesn't run windoze software, you are stumped. For me it's about getting the job done and not pulling your hair out while doing it ;)
I don't need dotnet to get it done, Mac has plenty of potential for every kind of job and does it gracefully to boot. You know what you're getting with a Mac. This functionality you speak of comes with a price. All too often I see people splashing out on fantastic hardware and software and not being able to use it properly because of some or other compatablity glitch or driver or bug... and then there are those software collectors who have to have it all but never use it....
Mac users tend to be different (although a generalization), but I find they USE what they have.

i can equip an entire fleet of Chinese CEO's with EEE PC's for R18,000 running linux, which surely rocks more than osx if you know how to use it. lol.

And if you can find the software you want lol. But seriously, Mac is an out of box experience... no compiling required. So their target market is the shrinkwrap crowd - people who just want things to work without fiddling.

ALL of that aside... an eee is another horse altogether...
the specs just don't match up side by side...
What storage capacity does it have... what RAM... what CPU... screen size?
Not even close.

From what I heard about Linux, u have to write your own software on the go.

OK I have played with the Dell M1330 (lots more power awful keyboard) the LG 12" also not a bad machine and I gave both of them good reviews. The Air is a great machine but it has a specific niche.
Maybe you should have read the article before jumping on your hobbyhorse.

Thank you for the use of the word niche.... if someone can find a one size fits all, no-one would bother stocking anything else... fact is... macs sell as do other brands ;)

These comparisons show the MacBook Air for what it really is...

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/first-benchmarks-macbook-air-is-the-slowest-apple-machine-on-th/

and a rather funny comparison as well...

http://www.10dailythings.com/2008/01/30/funny-computing-image-macbook-air-vs-commodore-sx-64/

and this review lists then things wrong with the MacBook Air...

and then for those of your thinking of getting one..... be aware that the ONLY usb port on the MacBook Air is very recessed and will not work with a lot of USB products. make sure yours works before buying a dud.

If is not as power as normal macs why is it so expensive? Couldn't they have made a mac version of the EEE?

But then again macs are for a (rich) niche and they don't want us commoners getting our grubby paws on their equipment :p

That's pretty much it.
Quoted from the Mac Dictionary:
niche |ni ch |
noun
a shallow recess, esp. one in a wall to display a statue or other ornament.
• ( one's niche) a comfortable or suitable position in life or employment : he is now a partner at a leading law firm and feels he has found his niche.
• a specialized but profitable corner of the market : [as adj. ] important new niche markets.
• Ecology a position or role taken by a kind of organism within its community. Such a position may be occupied by different organisms in different localities, e.g., antelopes in Africa and kangaroos in Australia.

All ultra portables are more expensive and don't deliver power for buck... by nature you have to have longer battery life, but hey - if you've travelled and have had to take out your packard bell with juke box and 21 inch screen to the annoyed stares from your neighbours, you will quickly reconsider the value of what you got ;)

Too bad the Lenovo is hella ugly, especially compared to the Air.
As much as I like the X300, I feel like they're really reaching here. Why bother making this chart when they're not competeing for the same demographic?
The battery bit is a little silly. Lighter, better battery life. Well not really. Its one or the other with the specs listed there.

If they're going to knock the MBA for not having things like GPS, then they need to include GPS in the price of the X300. If they're simply offering the same stuff at the same price, I fail to see how that makes the X300 'better'

Better security? Yeah, well, you're going to need it.

They could at least throw a couple bones to make this seem somewhat unbiased - like the fact that the X300 has no multitouch, or that the MBA gives you the option of OS X / Vista / XP.

Then theres the points they make such as "No Firewire" that applies to both. Why not say "No Floppy Drive" if they're going to go through and list the things neither of them has?
but they dont - every "Advantage" column entry gives the award to the X300 - even for patently obvious contradictions like the "Lighter, better battery life" entry when, as someone pointed out, the two are mutually exclusive.
Clearly this is marketing at it's best, but I think the point with the gps is that you CAN get it internal on the x300. Of course, they should have listed the gps on the MBA as External, because it's not like it's impossible to plug a gps into the MBA

Was this chart actually released by Lenovo? There's so many things wrong with it.

Is green supposed to highlight the Lenovo's features? If so, "Yes Bluetooth" shouldn't be in green, since the MacBook Air also has it, and it's even listed on it chart.

While both have the same size screen, the Lenovo has higher resolution, which should be a point in its favor.

Also, the MacBook Air actually does have an IR port, which the chart gets wrong - it's the little dark spot on the front right side of the case.

And calling it '0.73-0.92" thin' (Lenovo) does NOT make it thinner than something that's '0.16-0.76" thick' (Air).

Buy 6, keep one and donate the rest :D

And the installed battery is not user-replaceable, much like their iPods.
