Hi all,

So I've been given a older Macbook with Mac Os X 10.6.8 on it.

It's a Intel Core 2 Duo (2.16GHz)
1GB RAM
With (I think) a 120GB SSD in it.

I was asked to 'clear all the information' on it and give it to someone 'less fortunate' which I want to do - I'm sure this Macbook is still usable (to do basics, like Word, Excel, Youtube etc, even Khan Academy etc)

I'd like to know a couple of things since I'm a newbie to Macbooks.

1. What is the newest OS I can load on this Macbook?
2. How do I do it? Is there a youtube video someone can direct me to to guide me on how to do it or a site because I am struggling - I'd like to load (if there is a newer OS) onto a USB flash disk and do it, but failing that, maybe I can figure out how to create a CD/DVD of the newer OS?

I'd like to use this 'experience' as a opportunity to 'play' and 'teach' myself a bit about Macbooks.

High Sierra (dosdude patch) on 8GB flash drive. Upgrade to 2 - 4GB DDR2-667/800 memory.

10.6 is Snow Leopard and that might be as good as it gets as far as the OS on that machine goes I'm afraid.

Might have a problem with the integrated graphics processor... It might only be a 32 bit machine.

Okay; so!

It's not a SSD in the laptop. It's a normal Seagate 5400 120GB
Also, there are 2x 512MB chips in it - I'm sure I have bigger.

Found this youtube vid that helped:

Sorry @medicnick83 your MacBook 2,1 isn’t supported further than OS X Lion. :( dosdude1 doesn’t offer any newer version patches. However there might be others out there.

Might want to look at installing Windows on it. Otherwise I have seen Lion running fairly modern apps.

I will give this OS X Lion a go before going the Windows route :)

I was struggling now for ages to find a program that could unarchive the Sierra "file"

Use Command + R to wipe and recover it to a clean OS.

Stick to what Apple allows you to update to and don’t try any fancy hacks and it will be just fine.

Command + R does nothing hey.

Using the "options" key brings up the "selecting boot drive" which I've done and I've managed to figure out how to reinstall "Snow Leopard" which I'm doing - I'm going to reinstall it and then pass the laptop onto 'someone'

Aah right Command + R possibly only came in with Lion I think.

Update using Software Update to whatever the latest is it will take and leave it at that.

If that is indeed Lion then it should even get Apple + R but you’ve already gotten the job done so won’t really matter.

Question - I find this laptop to be a problem with alot of things - I keep getting "Your time is ahead" blah blah blah issues.
So... How do I go about loading Windows... say... 7 on this laptop.

I want to give it to someone who can use it and not struggle with it, right now, thought it works, it looks like it will be more a struggle than anything else - even for the most basic of stuff.

Windows 7 ISO and Bootcamp… If it exists on Snow Leopard or Lion. Should sort out drivers for you as well.

If time is getting lost there is some kind of persistence issue which will affect Windows equally.

As I recall you just put the disc/usb in and hold Alt on startup.

Quite honestly though you’ll have more problems running Windows on it with things not working properly as expected and the keyboard being wrong.

Don’t need Bootcamp at all for a full partition install.

The point is for ease in that Boot Camp downloads ‘Windows Support’ drivers that will run once booted into Windows. Much easier this way.

Aah right Windows 7 isn’t clever enough to self install that.

Either way you can procure that without first doing a Bootcamp install and being unable to nuke OSX.
