Plugged the drive into my Mac Air, disk utility - verify, failed

Repair disk - Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Reformat.

What I can't figure out is, is the drive failing because of physical failure or because of partition issues.

I used Repartition Bad Drive to isolate bad sectors from one of my damaged HDD's. Works like a charm now, but its not recommended for important data.

Got into Verbose mode

Gets to checking catalog file

After a minute or two gives a message saying boot failed and shuts down.

Do you have spare PC and a copy of Spinrite?

Well now I've stuffed it up completely - fortunately the data is not important.

Hooked the drive to my Mac Air, erased it via disk utility, stuck it back in the Macbook and whatever I do I cant get it back to the disk utility section to do a reinstall across wifi.

So now I have a white screen with a question mark.

Think I'll stick to fixing pcs, not Macs.

Reinstall from a USB drive - you've most likely removed the recovery partition

i had a similar problem a while back - try this:

once yosemite is downloaded, save a copy to an external device for backup purposes.

format the drive where yosemite is to be installed (currently connected to your mac air).
drag / copy the install file to the drive that is to have yosemite installed.
go to that drive, double click the install file to begin the installation process, a drive list will be presented for the installation, obviously select the drive that is connected externally that will ultimately return to the laptop as it's internal drive.

once installation is complete, shut down the mac air with the drive and it's new os system installed still connected externally.
restart your mac while holding down the option (alt) key until you are presented with an option of drives to boot from, one will be your mac, the other will be the drive connected externally.
select the externally connected drive.
your mac air should now boot from the external drive with the freshly installed os.

if it boots correctly from that drive, you should be able to pop it back into the laptop it came out of & boot that machine up normally.
if that machine then fails to boot again, it is a hardware issue with that particular laptop causing the problem - not the drive itself.

Seriously? You can install the os without the drive being connected to the Mac it's going to run on ?

yea.
try this method, it may take marginally longer, but if the boot problem remains you will know the issue is with the laptop and not the hard drive.

the key here is to save / backup the install file elsewhere to prevent having to download it again.
copy it to the drive in question, then double click on that file on the external drive and run from there.

be certain to select that same (external) drive as the installation destination.

dont get nervous when your own laptop wants to reboot to begin the install process, it is merely starting up again to use the yosemite installation file.

It's a folder with sub-folders, not a single file ?

Definitely drive failure - folder won't copy.

Off to get a new drive.

??

the file should look like this: (but obviously named yosemite, not mavericks)

while you are going out, maybe shoot past istore in canal walk with a (big enough) flash drive & have them copy the yosemite install file to the flash drive for you - it's a free service

This is what is on the Mac Air, but when I copied it to the Seagate drive it seemed to unpack it into folders. Is that correct ?
