MacBook Pro harddrive upgrade

Seagates have head issues.

Go buy yourself a Samsung 7200rpm drive or 5400rpm drive.

Won't it matter that the drive I have now is 5400rpm? can I buy a 7200 rpm drive?

No. You can buy any rpm drive you want.

But I will add that a 7200rpm drive draws more power and makes more noise. It all depends on what you want. Me personally would take a 7200rpm drive as it makes things snappier.

I do agree that a 7200rpm drive would be faster, was just scared that maybe the mac wouldn't recognize a faster drive. If it won't make a difference I will go for a 7200rpm drive.

The Seagates are pretty good... Also check out the Momentus XT (the hybrid drive) 'tho.
Big 1+ - if you can't afford a SSD this is a no brainer. I put one in my MBP and it made a big difference.

Hi there and let me add my 1c worth from personal experience.
I upgraded my MBP from the 320GB it came with to a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200RPM and it works like a charm. Go and Google this drive and you will be amazed to discover the the increased power consumption is minimal. All this for R540. Yes, I would love a SSD but the price is way above what I will invest at this stage.
BTW, My MBP is a post May 2010 model but I doubt if this should be a factor. Check with Core Technical in Gauteng.(0115359250) It worked for me.

I saw this, and it is really drawing my attention:

Worth the buy?
That seems like it.

You got the 500gb momentus hybrid for R540?

Interesting to note that my 13" with the hybrid takes roughly the same time to boot as a 11" MBA with its 64gb SSD.
