Macbook Pro refresh

Well if Apple does remove ethernet I will never buy another Apple laptop again

Equally stupid design of the stick wouldn't you agree? I've been looking at the various laptops lying around and they're all equipped with two, side-by-side, USB ports and they're all the same distance apart as on my MBP.

I can't see Apple removing the optical drive or the ethernet. Like FW they're both used by segments of their target market.

Agreed- but that Huawei modem is not the only offender. Some branded flash drives are just as stupid! Integral for example has useless bulk to either side. The Huawei modem I got from Voda a few months back has a RELIABLE (very rare) USB-A male-female extension, which I rely on for that speedstick and that modem. PCs I have seen with two next to each other in the same config also have a third on the other side though...

Dropping the Ethernet would be a good idea for a work environment, where it’s still more common (and secure) than WiFi.

Dropping the optical drive may not be too much of a bad idea, but they should do it just yet.

They could always use a external plugable ethernet port. Think of those old ISDN/Ethernet PCMCIA card where the actual port petruded just outside the case/card. You could make something similar with a ethernet connector on the end that simply slots into a thin slot extending the pins to a internal connector. Or don't mount the connector on the motherboard but rather to the case and connect it via a small plugable cable to the motherboard controller.

I think you might have omitted a "not" from there.

Not having ethernet would actually be a deal breaker for me. Would have to go with a hackintosh, god forbid! ;-(

Are there USB ethernet adaptors? :p

Yes, but they come with their own issues like drivers & no 1Gb/s.

This would be a stupid move if I ever saw one if Apple decides to go down this road.

I've said it before and i'm gonna say it again.
They're not gonna drop the Ethernet, dummies.

MacBook Pro stock has been dwindling internationally and this morning two Italian sites listed give new MacBook Pro part numbers (MC720, MC721, MC723, MC724, and MC725) that are said to represent the new updates. The new machines are said to be making their way to Italian resellers towards the end of the month with a released date of Thursday or Friday.

Should know what will be available this week, then I can decide if I am getting one!!!!! Would be nice to have a quad core 13", really would...

I feel bad for you too, i would be sad if i had just got mine as well...

You guys should really read mac rumours though and try stick to the apple cycles. Bought my macbook(aluminum) when they launched in 2008. Since this is the major update (as it has been a c2d ever since) its time to go get another one, and keep it for 2 - 3 years till they bump that :)

I bought mine last year September.. so im a little sad too :(
Why? It's still a great machine. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses - you'll be much happier. :)

Can't wait for thursday... should be interesting.

It's also Steve Job's 55th Birthday.

What's the big deal? There are no really impressive improvements mentioned. I'm very happy with my i7 MBP.
