Macbook Pro vs Macbook Air

It comes very close I believe, but doesn't quite outperform.
I've seen geekbench results showing the fastest current Air as faster, by a bit, than the 2010 17" 2.67. But current Macbook Pros still beat the Air. And you're not going to be buying another 2010 model. It's not so much whether the new Airs are faster than the old Pros, but buying something that suits your needs now and for the future, unless you have the money to upgrade next year again if you find the processing power inadequate for some of your uses.
In my experience you can never have enough processing power and memory if you intend to use something like Logic seriously. No matter how much processing power you throw at it you can always use more. But if you're dabbling and portability is more important, then that's different.
Personally I find the 15" MBP perfectly portable. I prefer not to take it on long hikes, but it's hardly huge or very heavy. And yes I have walked around all day with it. And if you're only now starting university, then I'm well over twice your age

Back on topic, been thinking about replacing my '09 13" MBP with the '11 13" MBP. The new 13" Air has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works 'tho. I wasn't even thinking about one but now, just 'cos they finally put a backlight keyboard in the Air... I... just... can't... decide... which... one... to... pick.
The Air has a higher res than the 13"MBP, that's pretty much what decided it for me.

Got the new 13" MB Air with 1.8Ghz processor, was a replacement for my 09 17" MB Pro, which was stolen whilst in Europe a few weeks ago.
Being that the the life cycle of the current MBP range is approaching its end and the MB Air was released fortuitously when passing through London recently, I bit the bullet and picked one up the day after it was released.
Have to say this thing screams and it's a dream to use. Highly recommend it. I'm a photographer and have been processing 20mp RAW images in Lightroom and it's probably approaching twice as quick my old 09 MBP. Albeit there are no portable hard drives with thunderbolt available yet, so it has yet to show full potential.
If you are not in hurry to buy, maybe you could wait for the next gen of MBP's which is likely to arrive within the next few months, otherwise these puppies are almost inarguably finest laptops available, I think your risk of regret would be low.

I am going for the MBA 1.8Ghz but looks like I will have to order it off ebay.

P.S.- and sorry to sound elitist but my impression of every other laptop out there now is that they are absolute Clunkers.

Maybe they might bring some pre-spec 1.8's in to SA. Apple store in London had them readily available, despite apple.com/uk stating it was special order only. And from what I have been told at iStore, the prices will be staying relatively the same, which may make it more worthwhile to buy locally. Wait and see I guess...

It'll probably still be cheaper to import from the US. Unfortunately you can't compare local to the UK. Apple has an actual presence over there.

I have prettymuch decided on the Air, my question now is as to where to get it from. I want the 13" with the i7 processor and it's special order. I can get it locally but it's gonna cost me R16500 AND I have to wait 5-6 weeks, or I can get it off eBay for around 15000 and get it within a week.

here there's a MBA going for under R14000 shipped, + VAT (R1900).
Says that he's a trusted seller, but he's technically breaking Apple's export rules so who knows how he's getting away with it.
Other means are to:
- have someone you know buy/receive and sneak it back to you (by far the cheapest)
- buy it off apple.com and have it sent via a mail forwarding service in the US.

If that ebay offer is kosher and you want the MBA in a hurry, sounds like it may be worth it. Otherwise getting stuff from overseas can be a schlepp and there are risks involved.
Factor this in and it makes the local price not tooo unreasonable. Plus you'll get a nice local power plug, which I guess is otherwise another +R600. Factor all this in and it makes R16500 seem quite reasonable.
It's really personal decision at the end of the day.

Thanks for your views. That one on ebay is actually exactly the one I'm going for, decided on it a couple of days ago, there are two on ebay, this one is cheaper. Going to purchase it tomorrow.
Will probably arrive by next week.
