MacOS Monterey

Any good? Any issues?
Yeah I like it. I'm no Mac power user but it works pretty well now with the last 2 updates. It's not ground breaking; for me the biggest change was in Safari.

Too scared it slows down my 2017 MBP more than what it is already. Pass until such time as they force me to update.

Been running it for a bit - Its more refinements and the big change is Safari, but you can switch some of the stuff off.

Its going fine so far, so issues - I suspect after the October Mac event, it will go Public.

Safari updated for folks on Big Sur a week or so ago anyway.

Keynote, Pages and Numbers updated this week.

I'm assuming those are indicators that Monterey isn't far off now.

Yeah I would imagine it will release sometime in October still.

Nothing particularly wrong in the Beta at present state. I’ve rolled it out to our core IT teams for testing and so far no drama.

Apple to release macOS Monterey and iOS 15.1 the week of October 25

Along with unveiling all-new MacBook Pro notebooks at its Unleashed event, Apple has officially shared the macOS Monterey and iOS 15.1 release dates. The major macOS update and iOS 15.1 will be launching next week.

Apple has been running its beta testing for macOS Monterey since June and now we’ve learned the anticipated new operating system will be available for all users with a compatible Mac soon.

In its AirPods 3 Newsroom post, Apple confirmed macOS Monterey will be arriving the week of October 25, likely the 25th or 26th.

iOS 15.1 re-enables SharePlay, adds support for COVID-19 vaccination cards, an Auto Macro toggle, and more.

New features and changes that come with macOS 12 Monterey include a totally redesigned Safari, Shortcuts app arriving on the Mac, a new Focus mode, Quick Notes, AirPlay to Mac, Universal Control to seamlessly work across multiple Apple devices, and more.

Apple releases macOS Monterey with all-new Safari, Shortcuts app, SharePlay, Live Text, more

One day ahead of the all-new MacBook Pro notebooks arriving to the first customers, Apple has officially launched its latest major update for Mac. macOS Monterey comes with a new Safari experience, Shortcuts app, Focus mode, Live Text, AirPlay to Mac, SharePlay, and more.

macOS Monterey is available now for all users. You can head to the Mac App Store to download the new OS but it is rolling out via OTA – head to System Preferences > Software Update. It comes in just over 12GB in size.

Don’t forget to make a fresh backup of your Mac and double-check if your critical apps are compatible with Monterey before installing it.

Should I upgrade to macOS Monterey?
  • TL;DR: if you have any concerns about app stability, performance issues, and other bugs, hold out at least for the next bug fix update (or maybe even a later update depending on your stability tolerance)
    • For reference, macOS 12.0.1 is the initial launch release
  • If you have critical apps that must work, make sure to check for Monterey compatibility before upgrading and of course remember to make a fresh backup
  • If you’re cool with the possiblity of initial bugs and issues (likely minor), go for it!
  • But if you still have concerns, install Monterey on a secondary Mac if you have one – or hold off for now

Updated this morning. Seems to be okay, haven't played around much yet.

@Bryn, have you still got the M1? Are you looking at upgrading with the release of the new Pro models, as I think you mentioned something like that a while ago in one of the other threads?

The last Apple device in the house, an Air from 2014, isn't supported anymore, but Big Sur already made it run like molasses. It's just a floater for casual browsing and terminal access, but the hardware is still great, except for the battery. Running EndeavourOS on it know, going strong again.

Yeah I'll probably get the 16" M1 Pro with 16GB memory and 1TB storage. The price jump after that point doesn't seem worth it for my needs.

And here I am on High Sierra.

I presume the MBA I'm getting in a couple of weeks won't be down-gradable to 10.13.
