Hi there!

I use to be the proud owner of a working apple macbook, until recently it bummed out on me. I switched it off as usual and went out, but on my return when I tried to reboot it it should a flashing folder with a question mark. I have no idea what this means and am thinking of taking it to the nearest certified Mac repair center, but want to know how bad this really is and if I would be able to fix it myself? I fear being charged through the roof at a repair center especially since I am a student. I rely on it heavily for my studies. Any Ideas?

If you are a student in Stellenbosch you're in luck, PM me.

I had that on my iMac.
Meant that my hard drive had packed up.
I got a new one at Digicape and they installed it.

I had this problem once on my mothers MB - DiskWarrior sorted it right out but apart from the usual YMMV a new drive might be cheaper. They're dead easy to replace so unless its still under warranty do it yourself.

My mothers data was critical so she had the drive replaced at her own expense and sent the drive to me to pull the data off. I'm still using the drive :)

Stick in ur OS cd, boot off it holding c key, go to utilities and select disk utility.
Do you see your hard drive there?

If you are in Jhb, my rate is a six-pack (Grolsch or Dreher) on success, nothing on failure.

Can only help on Saturday morning before I go to Loftus or Sunday onwards.

how I wish I was back in JHB not only for the help, but also to watch the game back home (sigh) unfortunately I am CPT. Is there a way for me to regain the data at all?

Did you try what i said? Is the drive in fact dead?
If disk utility does not pick it up, take the drive out and stick it in an external, see if it even spins up, if it does You can try use diskwarrior like bwana suggested, if its seriously poked, u can get a data recovery place to sort you out. Be prepared for a hefty bill of 3k +.

Sorry about that tau1z I tried the disk utility option, it picks up the hdd but it wont use it to startup, I read that i have to try and click repair it looks like its doing something for a while and then it stops and says that it cannot repair the drive.

That's what happened to mine, tried all the tools.
It also made a scratchy sound when booting.
I got a new 500 gig one for R930.

Been there - done that. Give DiskWarrior a shot.

I'm not too sure.. but I know the HDD is dead. I took it out and put it into my external casing, plugged it into another mac and well it didnt want to read it and just kept on making a funny clicking noise. I went out and got a new one, but thanks for the help guys.

Is this the first time you're mentioning a "funny clicking noise"?

yeah it is. I didnt hear it before till I put it into the external and try to repair it on another mac, I figured that must be like the last gasp of air and no amount of cpr would recover it. pity I didnt back up...I learned lesson
