A stunner of a shot IRG!

Something else to try.
Me neither - I bought a 1.4. I've still got the 1.8 to play with though. However that seems kinda extreme - why not just reduce the aperture? Can't see you doing this to your brand new 50 F1.8 though:

My bad - bit tricky to reduce the aperture on an electronic lens without the electrical feedthroughs though. A trick I've heard of is to set the aperture from the camera, press the DoF button, then to remove the lens while holding the DoF button in - sounds scary to meMe neither - I bought a 1.4. I've mentioned using that method a few times when I flip my plastic 50 for macro shots. Probably even mentioned it in this thread. My bad - bit tricky to reduce the aperture on an electronic lens without the electrical feedthroughs though. ...No electrical contacts, so no aperture control. That's fine if you're using a lens with an aperture ring, but if you're using an EF/EF-S lens, the lens will stay at it's widest aperture (unless you unmount the lens while holding down the Depth of Field preview button).

When you get a real flash you can make one of theseGonna try out my home made flash diffuser today I think. Should take care of the problem of my onboard flash causing a shadow from the lens barrel.
Really got to get hold of a real flash one day.
We've got a segmented roof - so we can just relocate to another roomExcellentWill think of doing that. So far it's been pretty much "Should I pay for repairs to the roof or get a flash?"
Turns out not wanting a roof to collapse and kill me is quite high in my priorities.
