Macrovision blocking recording from TopTV?

Uploaded a short sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybTJuAkJI6Q recorded directly to mpeg2 using ulead movie factory. Not wonderful, but not too bad right? A pity it seems to have been further compressed at youtube's side, or is there a way to upload in full resolution as is? (youtube newby)

Although the TopTV decoders implement Macrovision, not all recording devices are affected by this. The TiVo is able record from the TopTV set-top-box without any issues and it would appear that some DVD players are also able to record.

It may be worth posting to this thread the brand and model of other tested devices that are not affected by the Macrovision implementation.

I've got a LG HDD DVD recorder (RH1757), can record and time shift no problem.

LG HDD DVD recorder RH299 cant record (does pass through composite video though for live viewing),

LG HDD DVD recorder RH299 cant record (does pass through composite video though for live viewing),

BUT

The great news is I connected the supplied UHF cable to the UHF in port on the HDD, tuned it in, quality seems as good as composite, and the great thing is I can record and playback no problems!!

So thats a feasible solution for HDD users while we wait for a PVR add on to be released.

Used to have a Pinnacle PCTV Rave with which i recorded Macrovision Encryption from VHS for people who wanted to make backup dvd copies. Unfortunaly the card stopped working from how old it was.
Bought a Asus P7131 My Cinema TV Card, Somebody at work ask me to put a vhs tape they had to dvd. It Plays the content onscreen but as soon as you want to record from the it disables the recording function
or if you try to be clever by first trying to record from tv card and then playing the tape it would stop recording automaticaly. I Tried trough rca and rf. After that i googled the Marovision Enryption
and the main reason betamax fell away was because they did not have any encryption. You do get descramblers for macrovision encryption but i dont have any knowledge on how they work.

No, but mine was here in just under 2 weeks, came from Israel through the normal post office.

anyone found something local that can remove this protection? that 'grex' unit costs like R1000, sortof makes our hdd recorders pointless unless you connect the video through ur kettle and fridge via your lawnmower outside to somewhere hopefully 'lose' the protection....

I dont see why ppl would want to spend $$ on a macrovision unblocker, just plug the TV cable between the decoder and the HDD recorder, tune it in and hit record! Sheesh its not rocket science!:(

Even that does not work for me.

You're obviously not a home theatre enthusiast -> only mono sound recording on RF...

I just want an intern solution till they activate the usb port.

I get to record from all channels and above all, also schedule recording on my PC via Nero 9 through Nero Live, which also give me PVR Functionalities via RF, i must say the quality is so better and clearer, unlike MC DSD decoders. so yes, With my PC i have TopTv PVR Recoder :) hows that for Jah HUh.... and via RF I guess it plays under channel 58.

Was considering using our old desktop for that (and to store movies + mp3's on) but it sounds like a crows nest.

Just tried a different tack on a hunch and it worked! I connected audio-out from TTV decoder directly to HDD recorder's audio-in. Then connected the Rf from decoder to an old Sony VCR and from there via it's video-out to HDD recorders' video-in. This did not work as I suspected, due to the VCR also being Macrovision-compliant (as evident from my previous attempts at archiving my old video cassettes to HDD and then to DVD) Next I tried an old m-net decoder in the same configuration and it works. Proper recording to HDD in stereo! Timeshifting is also OK, so I'm a happy camper for no money spent.

so basically, from TTV rf out to mnet decoder in then rf out on mnet to hdd recorder? works?

No, use the scart connection on the back of mnet decoder to relay the av-out to HDD.

I suspect this might also work with an rf to av modulator, but regrettably don't have one to check. Maybe someone else might try this and let us know. These are much cheaper than special filters as mentioned previously in this thread.

Very innovative there, Magicflame!
I suppose the only downside is the extra "link" in the chain, hopefully the MNET decoder isn't power hungry, and the possibly reduced picture quality compared to directly using the composite out.
But certainly the best low cost solution thus far! :)
