I read in another thread somewhere the user manual for the decoder mentions that Macrovision is active. Can someone with a dvd/hdd recorder please try and record a movie on the movie channel?
What about writing this movie to dvd afterwards?

(Multichoice has started to implement copy protection, Macrovision and CGMS-A, through firmware updates. I've disabled my firmware updates to prevent this...)

You may just find that one day your decoder boots by itself, switch to default settings and update.

As far as I know, Multichoice are not utilising Macrovision but are definitely using CGMS-A.

MC copy protection only works through the HDMI on the HDPVR i can still recored with my DVD and DSD 1110 and the HD DVD through the AVout

Anyone succeeded with recording from TTV via TV Capture Card or something yet?

That is not quite true. CGMS-A is on the composite outputs on the HDPVR. HDMI has HDCP handshaking for copy protection.
I believe MC are rolling out CGMS-A protection on to the 1xxx series decoders now.
You can indeed record onto a HDD Recorder from any of the above, but it works on a one copy principle. You would be able to copy onto a CGMS-A DVD-R, if you can find any, but that would delete the recording off your HDD Recorder.
You may just be lucky bugger and have a HDD recorder that ignores all the above :-)

Onto TopTV, if there is copy protection that would be very harsh, especially as they have no PVR yet!

Maybe the manual just states this already for when they will activate it later once the pvr's become available. But this one is a show-stopper for me at the moment. No recording, no top-tv.
Can SOMEONE please try and record already!?

Anyone with a TV Tuner/Capture card amongst the 50,000? Pretty please, test :)

I hardly ever watch live TV, so prefer to record and auto remove ads, but need the ability to record.

I use a Hauppage PVR Tuner/Capture card which does circumvent Macrovision, but not sure of CGMS-A.

Will be tracking this thread for feedback and thanks in advance ;)

No winners - I don't even use a TV - I use my PC and capture card.
Good luck with HD - even a tougher cookie (not talking specifically about TTV here).

Tried today. No luck on recording to hard disc recorder via AV-out. "Record-blocking signals detected". Found an easy workaround though. Passed signal from RF through old DSTV decoder and from there to recorder; et voila! no problem!

Through RF unfortunately you lose stereo audio recording and thus Dolby Prologic 2 playback :(

You're quite right off course ajax, that little fact has not occurred to me, though my primary purpose was to record or time-shift shows for later viewing, rather than to archive them, which is of course strictly-speaking illegal anyway. A bit of a bummer for watching movies later in surround-sound though. Still, at least all is not lost as far as recording is concerned!

Will record in about 20 minutes. Just got to plug everything in :)
