So you saying all 215 40 tyres will have the same profile in mm? and that its 86mm? 8.6cm? Sorry but thats wrong, unless they they calculate with part that goes into the rim? Ive had Bridgestones, Pirellis, Michellins etc and they were all around the 40mm mark.

When referring to the purely geometrical data, a shortened form of the full notation is used. To take a common example, 195/55R16 would mean that the nominal width of the tire is approximately 195 mm at the widest point, the height of the side-wall of the tire is 55% of the width (107 mm in this example) and that the tire fits 16-inch-diameter (410 mm) wheels. The code gives a direct calculation of the theoretical diameter of the tire. For a size shown as "T/A_W" use (2*T*A/100) + (W*25.4) for a result in millimeters or (T*A/1270)+ W for a result in inches. Take the common example used above; (2*195*55/100)+(16*25.4) = 621 mm or (195*55/1270)+ 16 = 24.44 inches.

EDIT : Perhaps that's the figure with FULL tread - and I'm not taking the curvature into account. I think I need two rulers to get more accurate

Yip, coz 55% of 107 is more or less 55mm - which I agree with + thread like on Yokohamas.
But 55% of 195 is just way off.

195 * 0.55 = 107.25 -> 107 mm : sidewall height

16 inches = 40.64 cm -> 406.4 mm : rim diameter.

Therefore, total tyre diameter = 195*0.55*2 + 406.4

Also remember that tyres are sold to you with tread, not without. That's why the measurements will obviously include tread as it's part of the tyre.

An example:

If your tyre is 235 mm wide with a profile of 35 %, your sidewall height will be 235 * 0.35 = 82.25 mm. i.e. 8.225 cm

Do mine?
215/40 - car 1
235/45 - car 2
195/15 - car 3

Car 1 = 43 mm both front right and left.
 
40 is generally still fine, 35 or less is my idea of tiny.
My Mom's Mercedes comes with 17s with 45 side walls standard from the factory (220CDI), same for 17s on a BMW 3 series for example.

I'm fairly sure 17s with 45 side walls will fit on an i20, there is still quite a bit of space left with the current 15s fitted.

And to clarify, I HATE rims that protrude, you see them all the time, those cars that have 17s on but they are too big for the car. It MUST fit properly.

Not really sure why it would be bad to have 17s on an i20.

That i20 has also been lowered and those mags look like cheap crap, which is why it looks so utterly shyte.

Lowering + large rims = brakpan.
