Doing some research on these vehicles.
Have you ever owned one? If yes, what model, mileage? Any major issues or recurrent minor problems?
I am seriously considering buying a Mahindra. Either the double cab bakkie (ugly I know) or the XUV or even the Thar.

Got some friends that own them, if you want a workhorse and nothing but, they are pretty much the best you are going to do overall. Dad used to own the XUV, was rather good I must say but if you are looking for something to be comfy and pretty I'd say go for the Haval's

Depends....... was hunting in Alldays this year where the farmer had a Mahindra scorpion pick up. Now that bakkie works. Loadbin is fcked up with rust holes. Whole body is so to speak fcked up, but it still goes.
And then.... did some assessments at a huge mine outside potties. They had a Mahindra fleet. Bigest problems there was the centre bearings and then chasis that got bend.
My input.

Only serious thing I know of that broke was on a Bolero after we had spent the whole weekend exceeding its loading capacity by hauling sand about 6km over a peak it eventually blew a seal on the turbo after a shiteload of trips but it was an easy fix. Had you been in a Ranger or one of these mofie Raptors it would have given up on the first hand full of trips I'm sure, especially with the dust and heat.

Did a week long 4x4 trip in Giyai last year with one accompanying us. Of the 9 vehicles the Mahindra (Scorpio) was the only one that broke down repeatedly. The other vehicles (Toyota, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Nissan) got stuck; but none broke. The Mahindra made it through some pretty hard core terrain. But needed to be pulled/pushed and dragged over a lot of it. Fuel pickup pipe at the bottom of the tank ended up being the cause of its many failures. A small obstacle dented the bottom of the fuel tank and pushed the tank into the fuel pickup line causing fuel starvation. Not a badly priced car. But many better options out there.

I do about 60km of gravel road to and from work daily... The road is very corrugated and one stretch is clayish... During rains it is a nightmare and people get stuck. So I need a rugged 4X4 type of vehicle. The gravel road is going to take its toll on the car so buying a car for over R300k to waste on the gravel just doesn't make sense. GWM and JMC and the like is really poor quality and I doubt they will last me 5 years (target I have in mind).
The Mahindra's has been around for ages, they seem fairly rugged, fairly well priced and Ive heard some decent things about them. I am really leaning towards the Thar, but will even consider any of their other 4X4 models.
Car will mainly be used for daily commute, but I will also use it for the occasional camping trip. Decent 2nd hand VW, Toyota, Ford double cabs are way more expensive than a brand new Mahindra... But I dont want to buy something that will not last me at least 5 years or about 100 000Km.

Older model Nissan Hardbody 3.3 V6 4x4 ....... Have mine now for 8 Years. That thing is a beast anywhere.
Second hand prices is 80 - 100 K i think.

I'd say go for it, get the Thar.

Agree. Then we can have another thread next year:
Fcking POS Mahindra

lol, that is what I am hoping for with this thread, then I dont have to experience it myself... I hate making my own mistakes, prefer to learn out of other peoples mistakes.

See you're just down the road. Did you read the Thar review ? I was sort of interested but then decided against.

A good secondhand Nissan Np300 LWB 4x4 2.4l petrol or 2.5l diesel - and take your chances.
