Mahindra Scorpio N

Did 150km drive on the weekend. Feels great on the road - it's a nice drive.

My only complaints would be around glitchy software (which has updates coming).

Camera is laggy (fixed in Indian FW, but not in SA yet) + audio system stopped outputting sound one time I started up, powering off for a minute or two seemed to fix the issue.
Don’t feel too bad, my R1.2m Volvo sometimes decides it doesn’t have CarPlay. Just nope, no music for you today. I have to power cycle the car (turn it off, get out, lock it, wait 30s) and then it’s back. Apparently also waiting for firmware fix. It’s the system itself not CarPlay software.

Maybe a typo? I’ve seen V8s post less than that?!
It’s a typo it’s 6.9L/100km.

Right now on an engine with 650km on the clock I’ve got it down to 10.1km/L so my thoughts are it’s definitely attainable.

Folks in India are reporting 19km/L but they can’t do the speeds we can.

Update.

Still loving the vehicle. It's a pleasure to drive.

What I'm not loving is Mahindra Marketing / Customer care.

Scorpio N was launched under special intro pricing till end March 2023.
Based off this being advertised, I and others went and secured the vehicle - in order to lock in the lower intro pricing.

Today (26th April) that "special" intro pricing is still valid - pricing hasn't gone up.

It leaves me feeling that their marketing is disingenuous and that they're duping customers.
I've raised it with them and they've blanked me.

I'm 1000% happy with the vehicle and I don't regret the purchase, but the duplicity on the marketing side is galling.

You expect honesty or ethics from a dealer?

Really? You're annoyed that they've kept lower pricing? Probably isn't selling as well as they hoped.

"Customer care, yes, I'd like to complain. You gave me a special price on a vehicle, but I see that you're extending the special to others? What the hell?"

Must be one of the most odd complaint I have ever cone across.

Good on Mahindra for the competitive pricing.

I wanted a 4x4 so options were limited.

I really wanted a Jimny, but with an 8 month old baba that wasn’t an option.

I also didn’t want to top 600k and I wanted something super safe for said baba (this has 5 star global NCAP rating).

I considered the Chinese AWD units as a compromise but they’re very expensive fuel wise (10-11L/100km) whereas the Scorpio N is less (manufacturer specs are 6.9L/100km) - some Indian users have been getting 19km/L but obviously they don’t drive as fast as us!

At the end of the day I got a demo so 10k discount for 405km on clock, got 20k trade assist and an OK trade in offer so I pulled the trigger.

I’ve also eagerly been watching the local 4x4 forums, along with the Indian FB groups and feedback was generally decent.

It’s a lot of car for the money, you can almost double your budget for a similar spec Fortuner.
Going for a scorpion N test drive this week. @TheChamp nudged me to that direction. :-)

I always had second hand cars. What does "20k trade assist" exactly mean? Did they offer you just 20K for your car to trade-in ?

It is only natural to feel this way. TAL advertises special for couple of days and then 6 months later, you find out that item is at exactly same price. Or worse, there is another special which makes your purchase costlier.

Roll of the dice - these things.

He misses out on so much - like auto stop / start and the fact that Apple car play doesn’t exist locally or in India (other than 1 Scorpio N variant) due to licensing issues (it’s coming soon).
I like Ciro's reviews due to his style & detail but if you want to learn about issues of Mahindra, it is better to do search on australian & Indian YT reviewers. Some Indian YT reviews on Mahindra (at least YT shorts I saw) are so brutal that you would think Mahindra would shut down their shop soon.

Maybe Ciro is just a nice guy.

Which SUV brand "dominates" the streets, in your opinion ? And, tbh, I don't know what it means so explain that as well.
Dominate, ie take over the majority thereof i think, that would be the Toyota Fortuner, for thin fat dim and privileged alike, everyone likes it.

I see. Is there a survey on everyone liking it so that we can quantify it ? Or do you mean top selling SUV? Toyota cross seems to top the chart in 2023 so far.

I've had mine for about 5 months now. Drive is still nice, don't regret buying it.

At the moment the best deal you can get is prime -3% on selected models (check mahindra.co.za) - so take that deal over trade assist any day, as it's insane!

Trade assist means if you trade in a vehicle. They'll give you X vehicle value (whatever they quote you for your car) + 20k trade assist (which technically gets reimbursed to them by Mahindra) to sweeten the deal.

What sometimes happens though is they lowball you on the trade in - as the trade assist makes up for it (so make sure your trade in is fair, and not just trade assist subsidised).

The good, great vehicle - Mahindra has done well here for what it is and how it's priced.

The bad - customer service is shitty (in both India and ZA). The general just seems to be that nobody will get back to you unless you nudge and chase them. That + features like Apple Car play were just missing for 3 months while they futzed with firmware (yet it was being sold as Apple Car play enabled which it wasn't at the time).

I'm driving the Z8L 4x4 if you have any questions.
