Mahindra Scorpio N

Their diesel engine's are good - their petrol variants not so much, those have some issues.

The Scorpio N is a solid vehicle, some quirks here and there (but other brands have these too).

Pros:
- Good mileage for it's size
- Good size, position on the road
- Aircon is amazing, gets super cold quickly - 2 coils / condensers iirc one for front / back
- Value for money (given 4x4 at the price / features)
- Proper spare, tools
- Spacious vehicle (even more so if you remove the 4 bolts holding the 3rd row in place)

Cons:
- Fuel tank is smaller than it's rivals
- Firmware updates were slow to bring Apple Car play to market (pay for the car now, but no you can't have the functionality we've sold you till later :X3:
- Outwards opening door, vs upwards (less usable if someone parks you in or you reverse against a wall)
- Spare wheel under car vs at back of car (reduces ground clearance when 4x4'ing - Aussies are rectifying this with some aftermarket kit)
- Hardly any accessories locally available at this point
- They're tweaking the models as they come out - e.g. new models have foam padding around the sunroof to stop debris settling there, earlier produced models don't.
- No lighter 12v socket in the front - it's in the boot :X3:
- Stop start is on by default and you can't disable it permanently - you need to switch it off EVERY SINGLE F'ING time you start the car
- Added to this - the electronics and the F'ING lights switch off when the auto stop start kicks in (this is dangerous at night with loadshedding when you forget to disable it and you're trying to cross a big intersection)
- No parcel shelf (didn't bother me at first, does now) - get your windows tinted
Great summary from actual owner's perspective. Thank you for taking time to write about this. I think I am almost there - just battling between Z8L and Z8 now but had a look at review from Andries and looks that front camera would be very useful in certain off-road scenarios.

Plan to check this out during the week.

Yeah it's nice.

The main difference of why I did Z8L over Z8 is (I also got demo used pricing on Z8L, which made it easier - couldn't find this on Z8 at the time):
- Better speakers
- Wireless charging (useful to have multiple ways to charge if multiple people in car - I also keep a cable handy).
- Camera (front - I believe Z8 has rear) - all of which I didn't want to add aftermarket as people in India have added in aftermarket accessories (that require wiring), had fires and had their warranties denied)...

- The driver drowsiness BS I don't need.
- Sun roof - I'd never had one before, but I don't use it (maybe in summer I might, who knows)

Any idea if 519K is a decent price, all inclusive ? Considering launch price must have been 560K. 15000km mileage in a very short time though, not sure if I should go for it. Sales guy was driving it till now. Drives quite lekker.

This is not top of the range but is Z8 4x4 model. Tow bar is fitted so I suppose it would have cost them 6-8K or something.

Cheaper options on AutoTrader with less mileage.

If not in your location you could always use for bargaining pts and tell them look you could ship it (last I looked around 5k'ish to do so?), but you'd prefer to buy local, can they work on the price.

Thanks, 1 258 km from me. :) Of course, it can be arranged but it is complicated. Home ministry wants me to buy a new car so that springs car I saw is not an option. Need I say more?
IF you're in JHB what about the PTA one I linked too? Surely that's local enough?

1500km on the clock is nothing (mine had 500km, but I'd happily buy something with such low mileage and save a ton).

Thanks, PTA is very close by. That one is 4x2 though - I asked. Last time I bought a car (a second hand of year 2005) was in 2009 and I really doubt I will buy anytime in next 15 years so might as well go for 4x4.

It most definitely isn't.

1.) The pic says 4xplor - which is the 4x4 variant - check the back tailgate.
2.) 4x4 variants have 1x cup holder and 1x dial for the 4x4 bits (this is how you know it's not a 4x2).

Salesman is stupid, or they're buying custom lettering, 4x4 dials and gluing them on

Yoh - I am not made for all this price changes and schemes. It looks like they pushed up prices in July.. but with cash back, it seems cheaper now than at the launch ? I suppose launch price is a tentative indicator and they wing it as per sales?

I wouldn't do the cash back deal unless you've got cash sitting somewhere doing higher interest rates.

If they do cash back they're going to try weasel out of the prime -3% and offer your prime or some such. Over the term of the loan that interest % saved will make your cash back look like a drop in the pond.

I got a good price on a Z8L (R560k with 450km on the clock vs R590k new). At that point there weren't any discounted Z8's and the Z8 retailed for the same, so it was a no brainer.
Flip - for new Z8L, no one is budging below R588K. All singing from same tune of July increase.

Grab a demo with sub 2000 on the clock - then they'll drop.

Also i've seen ads for Rola offering 20-25k trade assist + the prime -3% offering.

So check Rola out.

Oh yeah - demo models have significant drop it seems. Thanks.

Got one. Z8L. Yay.
Where's our updates!

Did you snag one of those sweet prime -3% deals?
What did they let it go for in the end?

Ask them to update it to the newest firmware immediately (you can check version info from vehicle before and after).

The earlier firmware doesn't have Apple Car Play or Android Auto working properly AND has camera lag.

I got new Z8L for R575K so not bad. I financed it myself via some investments that I cashed in. Interest on -3% is still a lot.

I did about 300km driving over weekend - around city only, not much really. I feel as if I am sitting on a horse. and still haven't got used to it. LOL. On highway, sweet spot is 110-120 - cruises beautifully.

Otherwise, family is loving it as well. Thanks to @FiestaST , @TheChamp and your recommendations, I got this one. Finally.

Nice, the size / driving style took me a bit to get used to - felt very much like i was too close to lanes next to me initially, but it wore off and I got used to it.

It's a BoF vehicle - so keep to 140ish max as body roll is real.

Also some quirks that aren't immediately apparent - a long push of unlock (via remote) opens both front windows + sun roof. So don't let your kids play with the key inside the house, or you can come back to a wet car in the morning...

oh - will read up on body roll, sounds scary. Is it only for Z8L or applies to some other SUV/4x4s ?

My challenge is daily entry to garage. We got a cupboard in front and also there is lot of stuff on my side of garage so it is very tight fit. Right now, there is just 2 cm space in front and 4cm in the back when I park it. LOL.

I will have to move cupboards elsewhere and cleanup. My old car was really tiny in all respects.
