Mail & Guardian disappears behind paywall

SemiAccurate (a pretty accurate name) is behind a paywall and doing a bit too well. The prices are even worse:

Student is membership is for non-industry professionals who are looking to enter the industry. You are not required to be a student to purchase this membership level, although we do expect you to matriculate and get a job. It contains most news and analysis-lite directly surrounding it. It does not provide access to more the more detailed analysis, overarching industry implications, and any of the extras including Industry Analysis offered to the Professional subscribers of the site. Pricing is $100 for a year’s worth of access. We do not offer refunds for cancellation or termination.

They did this for a while some years ago. As for comments I know sites in the UK and Europe have been considering doing away with user comment sections because the authorities want to hold the site owners responsible for user comments. All part of the crackdown on free speech.

Don't worry. There is still the Daily Maverick.

Or maybe just pay for the content. We pay for video games we like to play. People pay for Netflix and DSTV. Surely intelligent and expert content is worth paying for.

Have you seen how much scientific articles cost if you don't have institutional access?

It's like $45-$100 per article.
 
Guys, as said, you pay for Netflix to watch some scripted bullSh-t so maybe pay for some good quality news and commentary. On the other hand maybe M&G is not worth it. Then maybe it was not worth the minutes of your lives you spent reading that drivel.

It's still cheaper than a sub to Stratfor.com
 
We have been spoilt with free news for a long time. That particular ride is coming to an end.

This is the beginning of the end for free news sites and places where the public can freely participate (in many cases anonymously) on a forum to air their views. Do yourself a favour and look for the list of most visited local web sites and start scratching off the sites who are either closing down their comments' sections or converting to pay sites, which will also allow them to control their comments' section, as you would no longer be anonymous.

bear in mind that the FPB has not achieved anything and there is no more online content regulation law than there was last year or ten years ago - news24 and others are just seeing the writing on the wall

i hear rumour that we may see an online name policy in the nearish future where we follow some other countries who are banning anonymity online (which i may not support but understand given the fact that we are all children when it comes to the Internet)
