Maimane admits to having problems with Die Stem

Oh please, editing someone else's work to just include your name doesn't make it yours. As for that last part, do you see the irony in quoting 'The Call' in this thread as proof of the anthem being country-specific?

You quoted the remnants of 'Die Stem', I wholeheartedly agree 'Die Stem' / 'The Call' is a proper anthem. Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika is not.

It expressly supports Afrikaner nationalism.

As far as I know the bit in our current anthem only talks about the mountains, the sky and the sea does it not?

Hardly Afrikaner nationalism.

Afrikaans is something we as South Africa should be proud of. It's the youngest language in the world. It's my heritage as much as it's yours as an Englishman. It should be recognised and appreciated. Just like I recognise and appreciate your language and your culture. I have no issues with English being in the anthem. Why would you have an issue with Afrikaans?

I dont know why poeple attach so much of who they are on a trivial things such as language. For me language is just a tool for person A to communicate with person B.

Yip, it's obviously not about the "Stem" but about Afrikaans. Maimane would be committing some kind of political suicide if it's against Afrikaans and not the "Stem". Afrikaans is the home language to more than just the White Afrikaans people. It's amazing how people forget how many people in SA actually has Afrikaans as a home language.

Many people myself included do not sing the Die Stem portion so I won't be sad to see it go - but I accept many will.

I just would like us to have our own anthem, not one that is also another countries anthem.

So the 1976 uprising for wanting to be taught in their own language was just stupid?

Wow, I would never have thought your view to be this naïve :o

76 was about being forced to learn in Afrikaans

Nope, was about being taught in Afrikaans

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bantu_Education_Act,_1953
In 1976, the Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974, which forced all black schools to use both Afrikaans and English as languages of instruction beginning with the last year of primary school, led to the Soweto Uprising in which more than 575 people died, at least 134 of them under the age of eighteen

Edit: sorry only read your post correctly now. My apologies :o

Or we can be the 5th country in the world to have an anthem with no words!

Spain, and?

You get arseholes on both sides of the spectrum who refuse to sing parts of the anthem.
Our anthem in a compromise, like so much in SA.

Bosnia, San Marino, and the Europe anthem (ok so it aint a country, but it's the thought that counts)

SA has possibly the best anthem of any country. No way we should chuck it.

It's long, monotonous and contains a remnant of apartheid. Chuck it. Include some other Afrikaans bit if people feel they're being excluded, but chuck Die Stem.

I'm not one for the concept of anthems anyway, so it wouldn't bother me if they did away with the entire thing...
