Hi all

My 4mb line has been running fine since I got it in Jan 2012. As of late, this is what occurs:

1. Pick up the phone, it crackles for a while then stops. This causes the ADSL line to drop and it then reconnects about 2 min later. Have replaced filter - makes no difference

2. Line drops randomly - irrespective of whether the phone is picked up

3. Router doesn't sync at 4096 like it should, after each reconnect, the router sync's at different speeds. Down 2560kbps, then 2080kbps, 2144kbps, 1359kbps, 168kbps, 311kbps etc. At the moment its sync'ind down at 255kbps. Resetting the router doesn't help. However, up sync seems to remain the same - at 511kbps. Obviously this causes extremely slow speeds

4. Telkom have reset my port and reapplied my account settings - doesnt make a difference. Technitions are coming out tomorrow

5. Currently, on my router home page, my 'DSL STATUS' is showing ADSL2+. It always used to show G.DMT

Here are my current router stats:

Alias Name SMC7904WBRA4
Software Version SMC7904WBRA4 v1.0.7.0
DSP Version 2.9.0.2
DSL
DSL mode T1.413 G.dmt ADSL2 ADSL2+
DSL Status ADSL2+, SHOWTIME.L0
Upstream Speed 511 kbps (Fast)
Downstream Speed 255 kbps (Fast)
Upstream SNR 8.8dB
Downstream SNR 6.5dB
Reconnection Counts 0
Uptime 46 min
Showtime 45 min

With regards to Upstream SNR, it normally is around 13 or 14, and my downstream SNR is usually 21 or so

Thanks, any help will be appreciated!!!

Are you sure the filter is connected correctly?

Your SNR margins are quite low as well, what attenuation are you getting?

Did you have rain recently before your issues started?

That sounds like your problem.

That SNR seems to be your issue, indicates a very noisy line and would definitely cause the issue with speeds and disconnects

You could also try changing the setting on the modem from adsl2+ to just adsl and see if that is not more stable. SNR and attenuation seem to vary quite a bit depending on adsl type used.

When you say you pick up the phone and it crackles this is indicative of a fault on the copper ,Telkom need to sort the line out.
Coastal areas have corrosion problems with the sea air so it could be a bad connection on your line .

Second this. Crackling on the voice line indicates failing copper somewhere, possibly worn or cracked cables or damaged sockets. Log a voice fault with Telkom, not an ADSL one and have the technician check the length of the line for damage.

Allrighty guys thanks for all answers!

@grim Yes, the filter is set up correctly, no heavy rain in quite a while, still looking for the attenuation stat on my router

Exchange is 041 379 xxx (theesecombe exchange afaik)

Sounds like a dry or faulty joint somewhere on your line. Log a fault and complain bitterly about the noise and crackle on your line. The guys looking after your area (based at the Linton Grange tower) are pretty sharp!

Hi guys

Telkom reported back to me that the fault was fixed on 09 May 2012.

Yes, it was fixed up until today :(

Problem is now exactly how it was before except the noise on the line isnt so bad

Have logged another fault - however I'd like to have an understanding of the problem

Here are my router stats

System
Alias Name SMC7904WBRA4
Software Version SMC7904WBRA4 v1.0.7.0
DSP Version 2.9.0.2
DSL
DSL mode T1.413 G.dmt ADSL2 ADSL2+
DSL Status ADSL2+, SHOWTIME.L0
Upstream Speed 511 kbps (Fast)
Downstream Speed 1436 kbps (Fast)
Upstream SNR 17.3dB
Downstream SNR 35.9dB
Reconnection Counts 12
Uptime 1 day, 23:07
Showtime 11h:55m

Any advise? Arent I supposed to be on G.DMT not ADSL2+??

Thanks!!

Hey

Thanks, im in Verdun road, about 2KM away

Can I ask telkom to change me over to G.DMT???

Hey roflcopter !! Swaziii here, remember me from teeworlds?

Anyway just wanted to check, what modem do you have?

Does your exchange support 10mb?

Is ur line with Telkom and what option are you paying for faster fastest etc

Changing over to G.DMT might be possible in your modem, I can in my linksys modem, change from multimode to G.DMT, but it isn't suggested as it looks like they are upgrading your exchange to adsl+2 which can support speeds up to 10mb and I'm some cases over that!
