Major Afrihost fibre outage

Internet service provider (ISP) Afrihost is experiencing a "high-impact" national fibre outage in South Africa.

Reports of problems at the ISP started spiking on the online service outage reporting website Downdetector at around 05:00 on Wednesday, 25 March 2026.

The outage has been resolved.
Services should be restored now.

the problem is, afrihost now constantly has outage once for every 1-2 months for the recent years.

I think they have to improve their reliability.

As an Openserve pleb my whole life long (no other providers in major areas in PTA), what even are the benefit of DHCP vs PPPOE? I see Atomic has a whole article rambling on about it - https://www.atomic.co.za/fibre-internet/pppoe/

• Software / CPU vs ASIC. PPPoE needs CPU resources to forward packets. This is much less efficient than hardware-accelerated ASIC routing. Read our article about ASIC routing.

• Consistent latency. The additional processing for PPPoE introduces variable latency and jitter, whereas direct Ethernet switching delivers predictable performance, especially for gaming or real-time applications.

- Never seen this before in the past 8+ years of regularly connecting to EU/NA, whether it is for work reasons, servers, or gaming.

• Overhead. PPPoE adds an 8-byte header to every packet, slightly reducing effective throughput on high-speed fibre links

- Can't comment on this, 500/250mbps running full speed, might be an issue if its 1/2.5GB

• IPv6 support. PPPoE often requires additional tunnelling or dual-stack hacks for IPv6, while native DHCPv6 enables seamless prefix delegation and full IPv6 support without legacy overhead.

- AFAIK other ISPs like CISP, Websquad does support IPV6 over PPPoE. And ew, IPv6

It was so major that I had zero impact at work and home. Open serve though.
It's lovely that Afrihost disclose it. It's not in the interest of a commercial company to do so. Afrihost is awesome.

Openserv does not use DHCP so it would never have impacted you

Please drop me DM, so we can have a look and follow up with the FNO if necessary. Openserve is on PPPoE, it was affected by the outage experienced yesterday.
