People do not seem to understand that 'any materials' suitable for a bomb are carefully tracked and logged (due to years of IRA extremism.) Considering the fact that the IRA have retired. Can you think of another group who would want to blow up America Express near the centre of London? This spot is the equivalent of NY Time's Square.

So how is this scenario.
The terrorist driving the car at 2am to deliver it to a preplanned spot so that it could be detonated at peak morning "traffic" suddenly notices smoke in the car. Realising that smoke+ explosives+fuel+gas+nails within his immediate surroundings = "deep ****" he k@ks himself, loses control of the vehicle crashing it and runs away at Olympic record beating speeds Leaving the lights on and himself soiled

I've been trying to figure out where the intended spot was. That is one hellava busy route and a major tourist gathering point, close also to the very centre of London (Charing Cross Station).
My guess it was AMEX.

Thursday evening was ladies' night at the Tiger Tiger club nearby. ---explains the chosen day - with 400 people around the area.
A clubber took ill and an ambulance was called to the club. One of the ambulance crew saw the 'smoke' in the car and alerted the police.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was Tiger Tiger, saw an article somewhere that said nightclubs are often preferred targets because they're seen as "sinful" etc.
