Johannesburg - Farm murders should be declared a priority in view of a rise in the crime this year, the Freedom Front Plus said on Wednesday.

"The murder of yet another farmer [at Buffelshoek] is unacceptable and the FF Plus is worried about the increase in farm murders from the beginning of this year," FF Plus North West leader Pieter Groenewald said.

A 49-year-old farmer and his wife were overpowered by about five armed men on a farm in Buffelshoek on Monday. The farmer was shot dead and his wife was beaten and tied up.

Groenewald said a recent government study found a farmer was three times more likely to be killed in a farm attack than a security guard in a cash-in-transit heist.

"We have been asking for a long time that farm murders, just like transit heists, be declared a priority crime."

He said the FFPlus would continue to raise the issue in Parliament.

Thats pretty bad stats

I see the FF don't explain how an armed cash in transit guard in an armored car wearing armor may make a harder target than an isolated in the middle of nowhere easy to ambush farmer.

All murder should be prioritized and yes something ought to be done about the vulnerability of farmers.

Three times more likely????? I would say like 100 times more likely.

How many farmers are there vs CIT guards? It's quite an odd comparison though because CIT guards have got a huge armoured vehicles AND colleagues armed to the teeth.

Since the CIT companies have moved to those really big armoured trucks (read: not just a Hi-Ace with reinforced panels) there haven't been as many stories in the newspapers.

A farmer who's not sat in a van packed with cash. I don't really think either of those things needed to be said.

Being a cash in transit guard used to be a lot more dangerous. Criminals will almost always consider risk before ill-gotten reward.

Farmers will have to pay more for security/to secure themselves and their farms.

Ive seen some of the pictures of how farmers & their wives, children got murdered. It is sickening.

But will our government do something about it? I doubt it.

They dont want to alienate their voters.

I've also seen those photos, very gruesome. Some idiot put an American serial killer's victim in those pictures (the one with the broomstick). What good is that doing?

Of the 50 people who die a day how many are farmers?

Police stats estimate that around 150,000 people have been murdered since 2003. The most pessimistic estimate to the number of farm murders is around 4000 so that works out to around 2.6% of the total number of victims.

What would be interesting is to see how those numbers compare to other occupations. I would imagine being unemployed is one of the high ones.

So if 3% of all murdered people happened to be domestic workers would we also call that genocide? Genocide of the domestic worker.

How about gardeners, perhaps there is Gardner genocide we are unaware of. Perhaps i should find out how many sales reps are murdered, who knows we could also be candidates for genocide.

That's a gross exaggeration by Fudzy, taken as part of all murder farmers make up <1% way less than 1%. There have been about 1500 farm murders from 1990 to about 2000s (I forget the exact period), and those numbers cover farm workers and visitors to farms.

I am starting to believe that farmers are more at risk of attack more then the average civilian.

Due to that fact they make up a small percentage of all murders?

What makes you feel that way? Is it a farm murder makes news while the other 48 people don't get a mention? Could you list your reasons why farmers who make up 1-3% of all deaths are more at risk than your average person?
