Hi Guys,

I'm interested in making an internet radio player that can play internet radio stations via WiFi.

Now I was wondering if any of you guys have done this before and what you would recommend if you have. I would like to use a raspberry pi and then hook it up to some speakers and put it in a nice case so that it would look good.

I would appreciate your guys input and expertise.

Regards
Rob

Like Dave said, a cell phone app. Then stream it to a Bluetooth speaker.

He could even use a cheap old Android phone installed in his custom made box with speakers and fit the phone into a dock with audio out to power a set of speakers.

Something like this:

The phone could even be recessed even further, with just the screen visible.

Hi Guys,

I did the same thing with my ras pi. There are a few options as to how you go about doing this. Ive listed some that I initially considered below:

Easiest route would be to setup a distro thats already geared for this, such as:
1. Install Volumio on your pi
2. Install Pi MusicBox on your pi

Alternatively, you could just install raspbian and then add the necessary audio streaming software components. The two that come to mind are:

MPD - which also has lots of clients (web and ios/android) that you can setup to control your audio.

Mopidy - You can also add a web frontend on the pi to control your music from the browser/cellphone or download apps on your phone for mopidy. (pi musicbox is based on Mopidy and mopidy is based on the mpd spec).

After playing around with Pi Musicbox, I ended up going back to raspbian and installing mopidy. This way I could make the pi do other things in addition to streaming and playing music. In my case this involved setting up a and download server and small NAS to stream content to my TV.

Now I am doing the same thing but with a beaglebone black which I got last year. Its not as good for audio since it has no dedicated audio out, but has better overall performance, networking and I/O.
