Make Win8 behave like Win7?

I did buy Windows 8, but after reinstalling Windows 7, I have completely forgotten about Windows 8.

Just enjoying my pc again, and the fact that my external WD USB3 1TB drive now actually switches off properly again.

Maybe dig out my Windows 8 Pro DVD next year again when you need it to upgrade to Windows 9? :p

Not sure how that reply had anything to do with your original point?

Anyway, if you dont like W8, you wont like W9. Everything is headed to post-PC.
 
Don't know what all the fuss is about.

I don't find it difficult to work with W8 in a similar fashion to W7. Just strip all the RT apps from Start (unpin) and arrange all your desktop apps in logically grouped two icon columns, as you would segment them into sub-menus in W7 Start menu.

You land up with newer/better W7 that just happens to have a full screen Start menu instead of a small one.

you would swear people spend 99% of there time trying to find apps and shutdown their pc.

me, as a normal user of a pc, spend 99% of my time in already opened apps.

But if you remove/ignore the RT environment, its just the next version of Windows with a full screen Start menu. You get the benefit of many new enhancements, some I've come across ...

- Faster startup & shutdown
- Picture login
- Better task manager/performance monitor
- Working Media Player DLNA unlike W7 e.g. perfect with a server like Serviio

For me even the Start Screen is faster & more efficient than the previous Start Menu.

You can activate it with your eyes closed, move mouse down+left & click, easier than having to target the Start orb in W7. Also much quicker get to your app icon (assuming they extend beyond the right edge), just roll the mouse wheel to pan to the required application group column, easier than navigating sub-menus in W7's Start menu.

So don't see how its ability work in touch environments is any hindrance to normal desktop usage?

I just hate the delays in Windows 8.

When you start your pc, now it's an extra click to get to your login screen.

When you want to access your settings menu, it's first to hover to bottom right, and then wait for a second, before it pops up. I faakin HATE those delays. In Windows 7, right click on desktop, Personalise/Screen Res and boom!, I'm there.

When you click on any program on the start screen, that's not a metro app, that delay when it switches to desktop mode.

Do you start to get the DELAY thing? Is it natural that things pause and then continue again? It just stops, for no apparent reason?

So sorry, I don't buy your Windows 8 gospel.

Look, I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Windows 8 might be a good idea on a Surface tablet, and it will make the OS shine, but it just doesn't do it for me on my desktop pc.

Which Picture Login makes up for handsomely, much faster than typing in a password.

Dont understand, you can just right-click on bottom left corner for Systems menu which has the Control Panel on it. Or just pin the Control Panel to the Start Screen.

What kind of machine are you running W8 on? I'm using an oldish Dell E6400 laptop, and transitions between Start & Desktop are lightning quick.

On login tap space before your password. Yes, its an extra tap, but your fingers are already there. Its literally 50ms.

You don't have to wait when you move your mouse to the top or bottom right. Move it to the corner and immediately move up. That animation after you wait for a while is just as a visual cue incase you don't know about the bar.

There is absolutely no delay on launching a non metro app. The start screen instantly disappears, and the only animation is the charms bar, which doesn't effect anything.

Hate Windows if you want, but don't tell people stuff that isn't true at all.

Also, by the way, the new start screen is actually a good way to speed things up. To open an app, tap the Windows key and immediately start typing a few letters of whatever you want and hit enter. Its faster than the quick launch in W7.

Settled on Pokki, much nicer than the other options. Reminds me of some of the linux desktop menus around.

Also did a setup similar to yours. Removed all the clutter and neatly organised things.

So now they have two options.
