Makro launches Kindle 3 e-book reader in SA

I'll take the new Nook (139$) any day over the Kindle.

Just under R1800 from Amazon when I ordered it, including delivery, which was within 4 days. That's a hell of a markup.

I've looked at going 3G myself but only guys that travel overseas with their Kindles seem to ever use it. Also not supported in most of dark Africa.

??
Not sure what you're on about here. I download all of the books that I buy from Amazon via 3g (plus of course the samples).

exclusive is selling the iRiver for R1700. doesnt have 3g or wifi but i reckon the support of more formats offsets this. really considering going for that instead of the kindle.
anyone here tried the iriver? reviews seem mixed

Just get calibre library. You can convert almost any format into a mobi format... or whats the format again? A friend did it for me and its awesome!

I bought a kindle 3g wifi from amazon directly. Paid about 2300 for the kindle and a 60$ cover + delivery + import tax. took 3days to deliver.

Why would anyone buy it from Makro if you can get it a lot cheaper from the source?

OOC: Get your ass to mafia!!! ;)

I'm sure this is just the 'introductory offer'.Prices should drop in the coming months.

I bought the special offer Kindle wifi while I was in the States 2 weeks ago, only $114. I also bought a cover for it $34, final amount came to R1163! Woohoo! Only difference is that it has an advert on the standby screen instead of a Kindle logo, meh. worth the $25 saving anyday. :D

Quick question for owners of the 3G model. How often do you use this feature? Is it that useful or would you settle for the Wifi model in hindsight?

I only use 3G for delivery. Select a title from Amazon's website, click once [I'm assuming that you have Amazon's One-Click activated] and within fifteen minutes you are reading the book ... awesome

all the guys that bought from amazon..was it the US or UK store ?
if US store, how do you charge it in SA ?

Purchased mine from the USA shortly after the Kindle 2 came out. The model is universal, i.e. 110/220V. Alternatively, plug it into your PC & via USB.

Step #1 after ordering your Kindle is to download calibre - for ebook management - from http://calibre-ebook.com/ . The freeware enables you to store books, convert between formats etc.
Step #2 is to do a bit of Googling for RSS feeds such as http://blog.booksontheknob.org and http://feeds.feedburner.com/addallamazon - there are quite a few - that list freebies from Amazon & others.

NB: You will probably be charged a $2 download for the freebies if from Amazon.

Then go mad ...
