Makro will be testing small-format stores in malls

Our local Game in the Brooklynn mall has closed down (Thankfully)

Was always a crappy store, with the closing sale, the staff only labeled 10% of the stock for clearance. If you wanted to buy anything you first have to take it to a till so you can get the price

I loose no sleep over those useless staff not having a job anymore.

Most of these stores closing is directly related to shitty staff
I wouldn't blame the staff, but management. Game used to have great support from staff but obviously the numbers and training was cut to the gone when Walmart took over. Only the appliance and tech session seems to have people assigned and it is almost impossible to find help in any other department.

I don't think Walmart understood what Game was then they bought it.

Just close the Game stores first and then reopen as the smaller stores.

Game is honestly the worst for service. I havent walked into one after they refused for me to walk out with an aircon I bought after I paid for it. It was marked down and the store manager wanted it, so they forced me to cancel the entire sale. The store manager had told security to prevent me from leaving the store even after I paid at the cashier for it. Thats why they have those idiots at the exit.

I dont think anyone know what Game was even who shopped at it.

Dion Wired was actually useful and operated in a space with far fewer alternatives.

They should have dropped Game rather. Game is basically a mini-Makro anyway, this is just a rebrand...
I wonder if either is worth keeping... they perhaps should have re-branded both with a fresh look.
I don't think Game or Makro inspire much excitement in anyone.

Makro's way of avoiding warranty claims

Purchased some acoustic tiles
Goods arrived in poor condition, only 6 of the 12 useable
Sent email to online email address same day
Got reply next day - we are very busy, it will take some time to reply
7 days later - what is wrong?
Resent same email with details
7 days later - it is out of our 14-day returns period, there is nothing we can do
I reminded them that the original email was sent the same day
No response
Store declines to accept "On-line only" items

So while I fundamentally agree that the move to include perishable goods into the Game format was a failure, I'm intrigued by this Directors and CEOs have deep pockets of public funds statement because that doesn't ring true. Depending on the size of the company they may have deep pockets of private capital to try new things and some of those things will be a failure, its still not public funds.

Game as a brand has become largely synonymous with cheap crap though, which wasn't always the case but I doubt that they can rescue the reputation of the brand. In my opinion it would make more sense to kill the brand entirely and replace the bigger Game stores with Makro branded entities that offer a smaller curated selection of the stock that Makro currently offers.
I don't think it's cheap crap, I just think the ranges are kind of loosely strung. IOW: No real specialty or niche that they're serving. Price isn't as competitive and service levels poor, with sales force not very knowledgeable. Hirsch's has picked up alot of the traditional Game Appliance Market. Even their Sports Dept is embarrassing. It would be sad to kill the brand but I guess if there's no way to re-inject new life into the cycle.. That would be it. It's left to be seen how the smaller Makro format pans out. I haven't been to one of these newer stores, but a smaller mirror footprint of the larger stores won't work. They'll have to carefully choose some departments over others to keep the trading density high and decide if they want to be a food store or a hard goods store. Place your bets now!

Do you still need a Makro card to shop there? Could never understand the point of the stupid thing.
Yeah, previously when their prices were discounted almost like you're buying direct from a wholesaler, it sort of made sense like you were getting an exclusive deal. Now, they're more pricier than many regular stores so you're right, I don't see the point, except for CRM purposes or vouchers/points.

Nah, Game is pretty well known for selling cheap crap this days, and with a very poorly put together set of ranges.
