Yes, ROVs can reach the deepest parts of the ocean at ~11000m in the Mariana Trench.

But can they cut into the wreckage and get into the cockpit and unscrew things. One would think the boxes would be pretty secured inside other boxes.

The plane will be broken up into pieces when it hits the water, they'll be able to recover pieces of the plane if it contains the fdr/cvr. From past incidents it seems they are usually found detached from the plane.

All this makes you wonder how some scientists are so confident "we will find alien life in the next 10 years" when we can't even find this aircraft on earth.

It's not as if the USA hasn't accidentally shot down an airliner before.

So has Russia, but in their case it was not accidentally.

i cant help but think more attention should be paid to the sunsail catamaran that was lost off the coast of austrailia.

A capsized catamaran found off Aghulas in South Africa is probably a Sunsail catamaran that has been missing for a year

its drift pattern from australia, sighting off maurituis, then reunion, culminating with it coming down the east coast of south africa - is remarkably similar to the drift pattern of debris known to be from this aircraft.

maybe, just maybe - somehow tracking ocean / wind currents / time / distance back towards australia - may reveal a few more clues

Sounding like possible contract issues but whats being said about the shorter survey runs could also point to those AUV batteries not holding up perhaps.
