Durban - President Jacob Zuma on Saturday lashed out at the conduct of ANC Youth League President Julius Malema, saying that the statements he made were totally alien to the culture of the ruling party.

Zuma criticised the youth league leader for defying the court ruling which banned the singing of the controversial "dubula ibhunu" (shoot the boer).

He also lambasted the horrendous manner in which Malema treated a BBC journalist and the statements he made about the Movement for Democratic Change after his visit to Zimbabwe.

"We reiterate that leaders should think before they speak, as their utterances have wider implications for the country," said Zuma addressing the media in Durban.

Drawing the line

He said his ANC leadership was drawing the line, and that there would be consequences for anyone who crossed that line.

"The relevant structure in the ANC will look at what has happened to see if the line has been crossed. If the line has been crossed, there will be consequences," he said.

Zuma said he had spoken to Malema by telephone about what happened in Zimbabwe and how he had treated a BBC journalist.

The commotion between Malema and the journalist took place at an ANCYL media briefing on Thursday.

Malema called BBC journalist Jonah Fisher a "bastard" and an "agent", before booting him out of the media briefing.

This after Fisher pointed out that Malema lived in Sandton - while the youth leader was chastising Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change for operating out of offices there.

Zuma said he had not received a complaint from the MDC about Malema’s statements.

Out of order

He said the ANC had called for the "dubula ibhunu" song not to be sung because the organisation respected the court ruling.

"When the ANC has made such a statement, it is totally out of order for us to continue as if such a statement was not made," he said.

In the current environment, the song could be misunderstood by those not familiar with the context and content of “our struggle”, he said.

"We must recognise the role of the judiciary as the final arbiter in disputes in society," he said.

He said there were procedures that one should follow to challenge court decisions.

"Defiance of these procedures should not be tolerated. It would make mockery of our judicial system."

Zuma said the ANC Youth League was not an independent body, saying that it existed within the umbrella policy and discipline of the ANC.

It's about time Zuma stepped in to put his mutt on a leash. Let's see if anything comes off it.

Not a good enough response from Zuma.

The fact that Malema is STILL the ANCYL president, and still a member of the ANC means they will do nothing.

Yeah it's just lip service to me. Not going to get excited until I see him booted out of the ANC.

The thing is that the youth league usually attracts lots of voters to the polls, and with the local elections coming up the ANC don't want him to screw it up for them. My guess is he'll be silenced until the elections, and then he'll be allowed to be himself again.

If the song means "death to apartheid" ... why don't they just change the words to mean the same in their language?

Julias cant be kicked out of the ANCYL now - the man has got a house in Sandton (as pointed out by the BBC "thing") and a Merc with monthly installments.

The media might also object to Julias being kicked out, cos he sells newspapers like it's going out of fashion. :p

Great stuff.

Of course we will get the usual suspects saying that this is not enough but it is likely that even if a public hanging of Malema was arranged they'd still say it is not enough. You just can't please some people and it just makes them look silly when they first of all say the ANC will keep quiet about Malema and then, when the ANC reigns him in, they just change their tune.

Lancelot : how can you even BEGIN to be satisified with that statement from Zuma?.. its purely a piece of paper and they will do nothing.

I beg to disagree. If they promise a public hanging I will be totally satisfied...;)

Ah, Sir Gullible. All is Ok and should be forgotten now, Malema, the ANC the criminals and anyone can do anything as long as Zuma say I will "talk" to him then all is well again. FFS, what a (.......) SA can drop to any low level, if there are any lower level than the current situation to fall down to, and Sir Gulible will find it all OK!

Sir Gulible

Malema's remarks and attitude towards a BBC journalist were DISGUSTING. Everytime I think of that interview I feel myself getting angry. Who the heck does Julius think he is exactly?

In his Low life mind he must be thinking, or developing the ego, thinking he is the KING like Dingaan (sorry: Cant' be he is a low life, not from ZULU material stock!), maybe he thinks and believes he's Idi Amin (Same fibre/type), maybe even thinking he is the POPE or GOD! What a mind sick nutter!

If I search this forum I am almost 100% convinced that I will find a number of members stating that they do not expect the ANC or Zuma to say anything to Malema. The ANC have now said something to Malema. But move those goalposts...

How exactly do you think politics works? Has Andre Visagie been kicked out of the AWB for his actions on Etv? Has his "party" publicly condemned what he did? The ANC and Zuma have now publicly condemned Malema's actions. Good on them. They can now be held to their word. I personally am happy with this.

Lancelot remember to think about how you would feel if someone threatened you existence, especially considering Africa's past.

All that was said is that Zuma "spoke" to Malema about what happened in Zim. Do you have a transcript? Thought so. Oh Sir Gulible! Zuma spoke to Malema many times before. Malema also speaks to Zuma. So what are you on about? You are personally Sir Gullible as we will see that Malema will now increase his "campaign" AFTER Zuma spoke to him.

Do not make this another Ruaan Pienaar affair. I can understand YOU been a Ruaan Fanboy, but Malema? FFS!
