All prisons in the modern world have a system like that. There are many forms of incarceration from community service, house arrest, supervised arrests, home weekends, etc. There's nothing shocking about it. Depends on the crime and dangers the convict is likely to pose to the community.

You are not to be surprised. In a modern world this is how prison works. It's like a school hostel. You get educated during the week and get a free pass on weekends. ;)

( if this is true I know why the world is a fut up place these days. :( )
 
Weekend prison passes are only offered to inmates who have not commited violent crimes and have been on good behavior for an extended time. Victimless crimes such as Tax Evasion and Fraud are the most likely candidates. Prisons may also offer work release programs where prisoners are released to work during the week to supplement a family income and then return to prison at night and over weekends. The reason being that it would be inhumane for a whole family to suffer when only the breadwinner is guilty of a crime.

Why send them to prison at all?

And what is wrong with the rest of the family? Why can they not work? No wonder people feel prison is not a deterrent.
What is the punishment in that.

Inhumane? You should have thought about that before you committed the crime.
 
I remember reading somewhere about a guy who went to prison for murder and after a couple of years he got a degree in law. Good.
The thing that made me angry was what he said. He said it was a blessing in disguise to have gone to prison. If it wasn't for that, he wouldn't have gotten his degree. Disgusting I tell you.

I say if you commit serious crime like murder/rape/armed robbery, etc - you lose all the rights. death penalty I say.

Your blood thirst doesn't inform policy. Would you rather he'd come out of prison still a murderer with no prospect for anything other than crime?
 
Yeah, geez that's the whole point of prison. To sort you out from a criminal low life to someone who can actually contribute to society. Problem is a lot of petty criminals come out a lot harder.

Appreciate it when it works the way it should.

You are forgetting single parent families. It's not always the men in the family who are the breadwinners and while they work to support their families, they still are under incarceration. Would you rather the families starve to death as punishment for their crimes?

Prison has never been about rehabilitation. It's main function is to remove the person who committed the crime from society. Rehabilitation can only occur when the prisoner wants it to and in many cases never does. As seen from Fuma's post, schooling and education is a fine example of rehabilitation in prison and is only awarded to those who show that they are worthy of returning to society.

Edit: Also I have to mention Fuma. I think you may have interpreted the prisoners intentions wrongly in that case. Do you know wether he meant he was glad he was did the crime and then became a better person, or wether he was glad he was caught and found guilty, because they are 2 different things. 1 means he isn't sorry for what he had done, and the other means he has atoned for his mistakes.

Uhm NO. Fraud is not a victimless crime (someone lost their money) This is completely unacceptable. If the family is struggling then they can receive his R1.20 per hour he receives for breaking rocks and digging trenches for pipes. Family still struggling make him work more hours voluntarily - maybe that way he will learn that there are consequences to actions.

Meaning he shouldn't get out of prison.
 
Sucks.
It might not be for rehab but it surely should be a deter you from doing that.

Single parents that steal should not have children in their care. It sets a bad example.

Yeah. My own law-abiding brothers and sisters are struggling at the moment and they could do anything to go to varsity.
